Hello All,
I want to switch external modems on my Win2000/Pro machine.
Do I have to "remove" the modem using the "Add/Remove Hardware" applet in
the control panel?
Or is it sufficient to power down the machine and switch the modems?

I may want to reinstall the original modem later. I am having a problem
with PCAnywhere on a dialup and I want to see if the problem is with the
modem, that's why I am switching modems. If switching modems does not fix
the PCA problem, I will return the original modem.

Thanks!

Also: I'm not sure if I have an installation disk for the modem I'm
switching in. It is an old Practical Peripherals, model PC288 LCD v.34.
Can I use a generic modem driver since I don't have the manufacturer's
driver? Actually, this modem probably predates Win/2000 so I doubt there is
a driver for this OS.

Thanks again.

Re: Switching External Modems on Win2000/Pro

Hi:
I suggest you to:

1- Uninstall any software related with your modems manufacturer, but the
drivers.
2-Switch off you PC.
3-Turn off the modems
4-Restart your server.

Just keeep a copy of the modem drivers for later use. Normaly the standard
MS drivers should be enought, to work with the modems, but just in case.

Saving Old Drivers

Saving Old Drivers

Hi Juan,
Thanks for your help.

I assume your procedure will leave the computer with no specific modem
driver installed.
So with no specific modem driver installed, will the OS automatically use
a generic driver for the modem? Or do I have to install another driver for
the modem? The other modem that I want to swap in is not plug and play.

Thanks, Chaim

Re: Saving Old Drivers

Hi:

Sorry for the late reply. As far as remenber, long time since I used a modem
8-), you can use the generic modem driver from windows. It will try to
detect it before installing. If you use the drivers provided by the
manufacturer, you will the see in the device name, the exact model your are
using inestead of "Standard 33600 bps Modem", for example. If they are
external modems when installing aggain and been detected, the will be
detected using hayes At commands.
