Win XP PRO, very slow to shut down, why?

My WIN XP PRO system runs fine except at shutdown when it takes 2 or 3
minutes to actually shut down after clicking the shut down icon.

Nothing unusual was loaded when this started happening. A few weeks
later I installed SP3 hoping it would fix things, it didn't.

The hard drive LED stops flashing during most of this delay time.

I also see some unusual static effect on the bottom of the video screen
during this time. Looks like the screen was in transition and suddenly
stops.

Help

Much has been written and documented on this issue. Review this article for some
clues:

Re: Win XP PRO, very slow to shut down, why?

I had the same problem after SP3.

See:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/...6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en

Download the Hive Cleanup tool from M$. Before it would take at least 90 sec
to shut down, afterwards, 20 sec.

Forget the Hive Cleanup tool someone suggested, it's garbage.

Try the following:

Go to Start > Run and enter REGEDIT and press OK. This fires up the
registry editor.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Edit the
following keys:

1) AutoEndTasks: Default is 0, make it 1

You can also try the following settings under the same branch:

2) ForegroundLockTimeout: Default is 20000, make it 0

3) HungAppTimeout:Default is 5000, try 1000, if it's still slow, try
500. I don't suggest going anything lower than 250 though as it could
really make programs / services that need a moment or two to end
act...funny.

4) WaitToKillAppTimeout: Default is 20000, try 1000, if it's still
slow, try 500. I don't suggest going anything lower than 250 though as
it could really make programs / services that need a moment or two to
end act...funny.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control

1) WaitToKillServiceTimeout: Default is 20000, try 2000. I don't use
this setting personally and it's questionable whether XP supports it
or not.

When you finish, reboot. Log into XP and then do a shutdown and see
how long it take.

If some of the keys above don't exists, just create them using the
right mouse button.

#1 is a String Value
#2 is DWORD value
#3 is a String value
#4 is a String value

Good luck.

Wolf:
Thanks, I tried all your suggestions...no change. :-(
I have noticed in my log that iexplorer.exe gives errors: 1001, 1002,
hung app.

You did reboot after making the changes and then tried a subsequent
shutdown after the computer booted up?

Any specifics on the error log such as Event ID and such? Do you see
any yellow or red event in the event viewer? If so, double click the
event for IE and post up the error message.

Something like this could be cause by having toolbars and other
add-ins / plug-ins stacked onto IE. What about your system tray, do
you have a legion of icons running in there?

Last but not least, have you already updated to Service Pack 3?

Yes I rebooted several times. Boot up dos seem faster.

Nothing unusual in error log.

Hardware shows no red or yellow flags.

My IE hasn't changed in a long time.

Tray has a few but nothing new.

I do have SP3, thought it might fix things, it didn't.

I tried the Hive service but it made no difference.

My normal "saving your settings" time is 140 seconds. After that
finishes, shutdown happens fast.

Since this started a few weeks ago without any apparent reason, I'm
hoping it will exit the same, and quickly. I guess I'll start playing
with disabling programs and services to see what happens.

One thing I might suggest trying is to do a defrag. Go grab jkdefrag
3.36 as it is a much more optimized defrag util than the built-in XP
one. Run it until completion, reboot and see if it helps any.

Also, how new is this computer? Is it an Intel based PC with Intel
chipsets?

Re: Win XP PRO, very slow to shut down, why?

Change the data value of the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value in the following registry key to a value of
-1- to clear page file at shut down. -0- to not clear at shut down.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

I finally solved this issue. I turned off Zone Alarm Security Suite
(ZASS) ver. 8.0.020.000 and the very next shutdown happened in a few
seconds rather than 2.5 minutes. :-)

I explored this and found that some people recommend downgrading ver. 8
ZASS to version 7 to "fix" this issue. I took a different path, I
deleted ZASS and installed Bit Defender Internet Security. The cost is
similar and BDIS lets me install on three computers rather than the one
that ZASS allows. NewEgg sold this to me 2 months ago as download
software at a good price.

My shutdowns now happen very very fast. :-)

Hope this helps someone else.

I do appreciate all the positive comments I've received. I will also
explore the jkdefrag 3.36, I like to play with things like that.

Peace,
JB

Thanks for passing along the info about Zone Alarm. Seems it's just
gotten worse with time. Cheers.
