I am having to install XP for about the 5th time in a couple of months.
The last install I was installing the 'patches' and 'updates' and after each
reboot XP would continually crash. So this time I'm going to install XP SP1a
then SP2 off the CD. Then anti virus and firewall then do a virus scan.
Looks like I'm going to have to go back to XP on 2 drives!

Thanks,
J.

And your question is? I would recommend NOT installing your AV and
firewall right after install SP2. I would recommend that you install
SP1a disconnected from the Internet. Then enable your Windows firewall,
connect to the Internet and install SP3 from a CD, not SP2, and then the
updates. After that, all your programs with the anti malware and anti
virus programs LAST. Then install your devices like your printer,
scanner and camera.

Sounds like bad hardware but there's no way for us to know because you
didn't provide any information about your computer.

Were these five reinstalls clean installs or repair installs?

Did you install all the necessary drivers?

If this is indeed a hardware issue, then I agree with Malke that you
should visit her page:

PUT XP on a fresh partition.

You still haven't told us anything about your computer or what updates you
installed. Perhaps you installed driver updates instead of getting them
from the OEM or the hardware mftrs.' websites. Just a guess based on no
information from you.

Without specifics, all I can suggest is that you install updates one at a
time to see which one is causing you the issue.

Re: XP Pro crashing

Why do you have to install so often?

Again,

Did you install all the necessary drivers? And if so, from where?

Why not perform a clean install?

That's what I am asking.

Re: XP Pro crashing

No the updates are MS (or should I say U/S) IE7, Windows etc. No drivers
involved.

Re: XP Pro crashing

I've installed the drivers off DVD (copied from manufactures CD's). I tried
installing Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 but windows crashed on boot up so went
into safe mode and did restore to this point. So far still running fine.
I've slip streamed SP2 and drivers and re-installed on C partition. So far
OK but I'll have to stick to Nero instead.
