Use the above to check your Broadband speeds, against what your ISP is
supposed to be suppling you.

clean out cache, temporary internet files, delete all windows temp/tmp
files. Defrag. Make sure you have enough space left on C: as you always
want at least 10 gig free on C:

Having a reasonable amount of free disk space helps towards good system
performance but how do you fix on a figure of 10 gb? The volume might be
any size from 20 gb to 500 gb. I doubt that performance would be good
where 490 gb of the volume was being used?

Can you tell us more about your operating system version +SP?, software,
updates recently installed..etc
Do you do your housekeeping by cleaning temp, scan for malware/viruses and
uninstall the old games which you played and not available anylonger.
How much Disk space you have got and how much RAM installed.

No, you want 15% free. I have XP on a ten gig drive and it works just
fine. I have a client with a 20 gig drive with 5 gigs free and it runs
like silk.

Re: Slow internet

Have you removed the Registry Cleaner?

Have you installed any memory optimisers? If yes remove them.

How much RAM?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Re: Slow internet

Do a Chkdsk on C: for an inconsistent state. Also verify your hard drive
channel is operating at it's optimal mode ( UDMA ) and not PIO. Either
of these conditions will cause a noticeable loss of performance.

RE: Slow internet

Go through these cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .
How to manage Add-Ons:

Run disk clean up and then run this command:
sfc /scannow

448 MB of RAM not bad for normal not accessive workload on the machine, but
if you play a lot of Games you will need more RAM about 1GB!

Re: Slow internet

What type of internet connection do you have? What type of downlead
speed are Comcast supposed to be providing you?

My reaction is you need to call Comcast technical support:
1-800-266-2278

Correction:

You tried to download something *else* and got 4 KB/s. When you ran
SpeedTest, you actually *did* download a (test) file

Please give us the link for your slow download. Perhaps there's
something wrong on the other end.

Re: Slow internet

it was www.speedtest.net the link the first poster gave me,
on that site I pressed "Turbo charge your your internet and PC performance"
i thought this was part of speedtest..

Gerry, i will try to call Comcast

Do you mean that site was for both things you described? (The 680 kbps
*and* the 4 kbps downloads?) I had asked for a link to the site where
you had "download[ed] something and... got 4 KB/s." If speedtest.net
showed your download speed to be 680 kbps, I'd say that's decent
(assuming you have DSL).

By the way, when I went to www.speedtest.net , I didn't see anything
about Turbo charging. It sounds like you clicked on an ad. And that
tells me you need to be more careful in your Web surfing. Clicking on
links without realizing what they are is the number one cause of people
getting malware on their PCs, and malware is one of the top causes (if
not the number one cause) of PC slowness. What is the malware status of
your PC? I seem to recall previous threads of yours, and I do remember
potential malware issues -- pro.exe being one.

As an aside, I have both cable broadband and dsl broadband. cable got
really slow when using win98SE. but when I put the cable on Vista it was
fast as heck.
