I'm going to be rebuilding a server in a couple of months. It is a Dell
PowerEdge 2850 connected to a PowerVault box. There are 2 RAID 1 arrays
in the PowerEdge and a RAID 10 in the PowerVault.

Id like to image the 3 arrays before wiping the server and rebuilding. I
currently have Backup Exec 9.1 Looking for a way to do this. Low cost
would be a good thing...

TIA

Hank,
what kind of capacity are we talking here (total disk cap, as well as used
cap) ?

RE: Image Backup of RAID arrays

I dont know about what you are looking to spend but look at Acronis. We use
this for our backup and imageing needs.

30/30/140 GB (usually about 30% used)

You can actually pick up a 500GB external HD pretty cheaply, why not
NTBackup to that ?
(or image to that ?)

The issue is how to create an image file of a RAID array.

ah ok, understand your question now.

I would use Acronis for this http://www.acronis.com/
again, will require some investment in the software

any particular reason you don't want to do this with NTBackup or Backup Exec
9.1 (which you already have) ?

NTBACKUP requires reinstalling the OS and gets a bit complicated,
especially with boot partitions. My problems with Backup Exec have
always been getting the correct drivers on the boot disk/CD.. I'm going
to take another look/try at it.. Thanks....

Re: Image Backup of RAID arrays

I tried taking an image of an old server that had a raid controller with no
luck. It wouldn't boot afterward... Do others have success using Acronis
or Ghost? Just curious...
