Have mis-edited registry keyboard value

Hi, I believe I've deleted the 'upperlimit' value in the registry for my
keyboard (I was trying to do so for my CD drive, following a knowledge base
article). Now, when my computer boots up, I can't log on as the keyboard
won't work. It still functions in the BIOS. I'm using XP, SP3 on a Dell
Dimension 3000.

I have a (slightly old) back up of the registry on my hard drive, so I can
copy and paste the correct value over if only I could log on. It's a bit
Catch-22. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

You might need to do a manual system restore, adapting parts of the
procedure here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Use a Linux boot CD, recovery console from your XP CD, or host the drive on
another system.

If you've got another system and they are networked, you can also try
loading the registry from the other system. Open Regedit., then choose
File, .Connect Network registry, and then enter the name of the PC in
question.

Does adding another second keyboard, USB or PS/2, help at all?

Finally, if you can't log on because the keyboard won't allow you to enter
the password, you could use one of the Linux-based password removal CDs,
clear the PW and then you can use your mouse to get in and use System
Restore. If you are using XP Pro and there is the slightest possibility
that you've invoked encryption, do NOT do this.

Or, launch in Safe Mode and use the Administrator account which often has no
password - this is particularly often the case with XP Home.

Try booting to the Last Known Good Configuration, tap the F8 key before
Windows starts to boot and you will get to the screen where you can
select different boot options.
