Sooo here's the deal.. fought off a nasty virus/worm/trojan... I think
everything is gone now, but it royally screwed up a bunch of my admin
privledges.. I've managed to get back most if not all admin privledges
(from what I can tell), and I've been working on updating all the
microsoft updates.. I'm at service pack 3 for windows XP home edition
and I continually get, "update failed, error code 0x80070005"
I've tried a number of things including installing manually through the
microsoft website... Tried downloading the MGAdiag2.exe and then running
the wga2update.. no dice.. starting lookin around, and checked my admin
privledges in regedit.exe and followed a few how-to's.. found my
legitcheckcontrol.legitcheck admin and system both had full rights,, my
legitcheckcontrol.legitcheck1 has just my personal login, no admin, no
system, etc..
SO,, after none of this has worked, I decided to post where someone
more familiar with xp could help,, so... help? please?? LOL thank you
very much :)

RE: Unable to install SP3 with auto updates or manually...

If the system is clean -

"Access Denied" aka "0x80070005"

First, make sure that your anti virus software isn't locking the registry
and preventing the installer from modifying the same.

Error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "Access is
denied" or “Service Pack installation did not complete”

I'd say you have much more work to do.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0, or other
appropriate forums for review by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
