Windows Vista Trying to set up new laptop

On my new HP dv7t laptop I tried to make an incremental backup before I
tried to transfer folders and files etc. from my desktop. The laptop has 2 -
250 GB hard drives. It made the whole backup onto my second drive. I
thought at first it had wiped out the first drive. I tried to reset to an
earlier date

I went to the laptop and opened "Computer". It says
HP_RECOVERY (E)8.78 GB. And HP_RECOVERY (H) 9.34 gb.
I am confused as to what to do next.

Do I now reinstall the Windows Vista Home Premium from my discs? Will that
automatically restore it to the place the orig. Restore backup was. (hp does
not send ANY discs). But I did make my own discs as soon as I got the
machine.

And just to make it a little more complicated. I would like to get the
anytime update to Ultimate so both my laptop and my desktop will be the
same, and I will be able to sync them. Would the Vista upgrade disc install
correctly with what I have now?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

With the factory restore disks made, if you boot from the disk and follow
the onscreen instructions, it should restore the system to exactly the way
it came from the factory.
If that is not what you want, explain what you are trying to accomplish a
little better and we may be able to help you.

If you download the Anytime Upgrade, burn it to disk and make a backup copy
in case of disk failure (Hard Disk and CD/DVDs have been known to fail...).
I usually write the activation code for downloaded files on the CD or DVD
and make a text file with the code that I include when burning the disk.

Does your HP start correctly?
Is the origonal data still on your C (Documents folder) drive?
Are they (HP_Reocovery) the only two items shown in My Computer?

The HP starts correctly. Under Computer - OS (C , there is no documents
folder. There is (on the left OS(C -on the right (C163GB FREE OF 222 GB)
ON RIGHT OS (D - ON left (D 196GB free of 222 GB) - ON right HP_RECOVERY
(E - on left 1.73 GB Free of 10.5GB) - on right HP_RECOVERY (H - on left
1.37 GB free of 10.5 GB. Summary: 4 items under hard disc Drives (4) OS
(C OS(D HP_RECOVERY (E 8.78gb AND HP_RECOVERY (H 9.34gb

If I restore to factory settings with the restore disks I made, will I lose
my Linksys connection and have to set it up all over again? And my LoJack
Setup?
If I backup the HP to an external hard drive before I reset it to factory
settings will I be able to pull just the programs I don't want to lose back
in after the restore. How would I need to back it up to do that? as a
picture or is there a way to just backup the things I want to restore to the
external hard drive?

Can't be done. There are too many settings in the registry that are
required for most programs to run, and there is no way to pick and
choose those.

I cannot work out what you have done.
If this was me I would either *copy* all docs to an external, or use a third
party backup tool to backup/copy the docs only.
Then restore your sytem to factory defaults and start over.
Personally I've never used any of the default windows backup applications,
but allways a third party tool.
One of the tools I use is Acronis, another I use is simply a copy
application for data only.
