Uninstalling IE7 before installing XP SP3

I am planning to install the SP3 automatic update. I use Firefox as my
default browser but I do have IE7 installed in case I need it in an
unforeseen circumstance. I saw where IE7 can't be uninstalled after
installing SP3.

Question: Is it good practice to uninstall IE7 before updating XP to
SP3 -- and then reinstalling IE7?

In Add/remove programs, I get a long list of programs that might not
work after uninstalling IE7 because they were installed after. Most
are windows updates and I don't have any idea what they do.

Any Advice?

Re: Uninstalling IE7 before installing XP SP3

Do you plan to uninstall IE 7 in the future?

I don't know how to decide that. Philosophically, it seems like having
an option would make for a cleaner configuration.

But that Is why I asked.

Re: Uninstalling IE7 before installing XP SP3

I'm not sure philosophy has much to do with it. If you think you'll want to
uninstall IE 7 in future, it will be easier to do so if you install IE 7
after you install SP 3. If you don't think you'll want to uninstall IE 7 in
future it doesn't really matter whether you install IE 7 first or SP 3
first.

Several recommended fixes to when IE 7 is not working correctly is to
un-install IE. So un-install IE 7 before SP3.

Also, do not use the Automatic update version. Download the full SP3
install for network administrators. Then disconnect from the Internet
and disable your anti-virus before updating to SP3. Updating to SP3
with anti-virus sofware running can cause the update to fail.

Hi Stan,

When I first installed SP3 on my personal workstation, I had IE7
installed. I later wanted to remove it so I uninstalled SP3, removed
IE7 and I also removed all Windows Updates. I did this because I found
that SP3 didn't remove a lot of prior update folders like SP2 did. So
by removing all the updates, then installing SP3 and updating again, a
lot of unnecessary files and folders were eliminated. I didn't worry
about the notice that some programs may not work properly, since I would
be adding back in any updates after SP3 (and not one didn't work properly).

I haven't reinstalled IE7 since I use Firefox also, and the one program
that uses IE works much better without IE7 being installed.

Thanks.

I have XP Pro and two other PCs connected peer to peer -- one by
wireless. Would the full SP3 be better for me than the automatic
update version? If so, why?

I had that experience when SP3 first tried to install by automatic
update. I had Ad-Aware running. Eventually the uninstall wizard kicked
in and took XP back to SP2.

How did you remove the SP2 updates?

Did you use the automatic update version of SP3?

Not SP2 updates, but any updates I could remove after SP2. Then SP3
took care of reinstalling them without leaving other junk from the prior
updates.

In all my SP3 updating, I download the full version to a server and
update all the workstations from a local location. And new installs I
created a slipstreamed CD with SP3 installed.

That's what I thought, reading this.
The option should be there to uninstall something if you want.
I've heard so much (problems) about putting in the SP3, things like
changing something in the reg to get it to go in, etc. I decided not to do
it right now.
I don't know if something terrible will happen, except for it
downloading and asking me if I accept it (it can't be stopped till that
point) and me saying NO, every now and then.
Maybe it's good and has my best interests at heart, but I like to have
some control over my own computer and OS.

I can't find IE7 in [add/remove programs] anymore. What exactly is
it's name there.?

I started to remove it yesterday but when I saw the long list of other
programs that could be effected I cancel out of [remove] ,
[add/remove], and [control panel]. I went back to remove it today but
it wasn't there in the list of currently installed programs!

IE7 is still installed. In [Help][About]
Version=7.0.5730.00
Update versions=0

I wish to uninstall IE7 before installing XP-SP3.

No problem. I suppose you discovered it was listed as "Windows Internet
Explorer 7" in Add/Remove Programs.

Right. But now I have another issue.

I uninstalled IE7. Ran auto update. Rejected reinstall of IE7. Ran
auto update again to install SP3 and it ran for quite a while. Then it
said that it was not finished installing SP3 and had to download
another component from the Internet. OK. Task manager showed activity
for a while and then no activity. After 1/2 hour of silence and no
icon in the tray, I rebooted the PC. The reboot was successful but I
don't think SP3 finished installing.

WinXP SP3 has not installed.

When installing WinXP SP3, be it via Automatic Update or Windows Update, be
exceedingly patient. Depending on how busy the Windows Update servers are
(and they're usually swamped on weekends), it could take 2 to 3 hours
(possibly more) before the download and installation completes. Resist the
temptation to stop the install or use the computer to do other stuff: Just
walk away then check the progress every now and then.

WinXP SP3 will not even begin to install until you've approved the EULA,
even if Automatic Update is configured to the default setting of Automatic.

After the installation has completed, you will be given a very clear prompt
to reboot. Here's a tip: Reboot twice.

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Re: Uninstalling IE7 before installing XP SP3

Then you would be able to install on the other computers without having to
download again.
