I have a server that loves to shut down unexpectedly,

What are my options for trouble shooting this

the shutdown log folder is empty and my event viewer only says that my
server had an unexpected shutdown

Tools, Logs, Debug I can set up?

Spam me with helpful ideas:)

This is going to be a hardware problem, if it isn't even writing something
to the event log. Or you don't have a good managed UPS on this server. It
could be something overheating. Could be plenty of things!

I'd get the server manufacturer's diagnostics and run them against
everything, for starters.

Re: Unexpected 2003 server shut downs

Back in the old days of Win2000 there was a virus (Blaster I believe), that
would shutdown an important service (LSAS I believe) which would cause
computer to go into restart.

Even today, you can open task manager and start stopping proceses (mostly
svchost.exe). When you hit the right one, your computer would go into
restart. What I'm aiming at, is that it is possible that some important
process gets stopped, causing a system shutdown. This could indeed be caused
by hardware failure of just about any sort (memory, cache, processor, even
disk/RAID controller, graphics, PSU, electrical spikes etc).

It would be helpful if you could establish a pattern.

Believe it or not, but once I had a system crashing because of a radar! We
didn't know what was causing it until one day we had a radio turned on while
we were working on a system. Right when the system crashed, we heard a noise
sweep on the radio. Then another sweep again and so on in regular intervals
for a couple of minutes. It turned out there was army repair shop in the
next yard.

Anyway, good luck with your investigation, Derek.

Re: Unexpected 2003 server shut downs

I just got through the same. PS overheated and shutdown the system Changed the PS and problem solved.

Now I am not saying that it is the same with you but it can be 1 of many possibilities.
If it is the PS then touch the top of the housing and if it is too hot (almost not touchable) then it is the PS
