Need to Clone Laptop HDD

Is there a cloning program, such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost, that
will clone a laptop hard drive to a USB hard drive using a CD disk, or do
they require a floppy drive? I'm very familiar with Drive Image, which runs
in Caldera DOS, but I don't know how to make a USB drive visible in DOS.

I've ordered a Lenovo r61 for a college student, with XP Pro, and after I
decrapify it, add SP-3, Avast and ZA, etc, I'd like to make a clone.

Yes, You can use Acronis to clone a laptop to a USB. You don't need a
CD or floppy, you simply install the program on the laptop.
However Acronis will allow you to make a CD boot disk (if that's what
you mean by 'using a cd'), and then you can boot and make the clone.

I am a big fan of Acronis. Get Workstation with the universal restore
option, to cover all your bases.

I just tried the free trial version of Acronis, and it wouldn't allow me to
clone a C partition of 15 GB to a blank USB HDD of 80 GB. I want something
like Drive Image 2002 wherein I can select any partition on on HDD and clone
it to another HDD (but not one on a USB port). Also, it requires a floppy
drive. I want to clone a primary partition of about 80 GB to a USB drive of
80 GB by booting to a CD that has the cloning program.

If you add Zone Alarm you will be "recrapify" it... big time!

Try BootIT NG, http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/index.htm

Boot from the CD or flash drive, don't install the program , just go into
maintainence mode and you can create an image from there.

I have not tried the trial copy, but I have both 9 and 11 versions of
ATI and it WILL clone from a 80 gig to a 100 gig USB drive. And it
will make a boot CD. I have to wonder about your setup then, as I
never thought the trial software they gave out was crippled in any way.

Then go get drive image 2002.

application is not worth bothering with, we see posts here all the time

John John, if you think that's a list of problems, you ought to look at the
Microsoft.Pubic.windowsxp.general group...there are a gazillion problems
posted AND COUNTING. As for my computer, I built it, I loaded the operating
system, I turned off Microsoft's so called firewall, I loaded a free
anti-virus since Microsoft apparently doesn't think we need one with their
"new secure XP Professional" operating system, I installed Zone Alarm, and
this little beauty has been purring like a kitten for several years. I've
loaded Zone Alarm in many computers, never had or observed a problem until
Microsoft came out with SP-3, and it caused Zone Alarm to put out a patch.
You would do well to recommend a better firewall, if you indeed wish to be
VALUABLE, and that is assuming you can name a better one.

Also, this thread is about cloning a laptop, not firewalls. If I could find
a good cloning program that worked half as well as Zone Alarm, or Drive
Image 2002 for that matter, I wouldn't have posted my question to this
group. I'm beginning to wonder, if you aren't Carey Frisch in disguise!

My understanding is that Acronis will allow you to clone the entire hard
drive, but not just one partition. I believe Casper XP can do what you
are describing.

But why not make an image of your C: partiton? Granted, it's another
step to restore this image to your USB external hard drive, but it will
work in a pinch.

I have ATI Home 9.0. Although it lets me resize the partitions during
the cloning of an entire hard drive, I'm pretty sure there's no way to
select just *one* of the partitions to clone. Googling confirms this
(even in Version 11). If you are able to point me to information to the
contrary, I certainly welcome it. I would imagine more expensive
versions of Acronis (Workstation or Enterprise) have this capability. Or
if I am wrong or if there is a tweak or hack to make this work, I would
certainly like to know about it.

Why would anyone want to clone 15 GB to an 80 GB drive? A backup
image would do the trick using ATI. Also ZA is probably causing problems.

You are correct Daave. I contacted Acronis and they confirmed that Acronis
Home 11 will not clone a partition, only the complete drive. Bummer, eh?
Drive Image 2002 was so sweet, copying each partition as you choose, in
Caldera DOS, and copying at 2,100 MB/Min.

Also, Acronis advised me that it does not clone a drive in DOS. And, that
they do not recommend cloning to an external USB drive because of the
possibility of boot problems. Woe is me.

The reason I did it is because I wanted to test the Trial Version of Acronis
True Image, and I wanted to clone a 15 GB partition to an external USB HDD
that was clean and just happened to be sitting there running. It was a
test, it was only a test, if it had been a real emergency it wouldn't have

I think the issue is the word Clone. I do an image backup of just a
partition and have no issue. But clone, no, I have not done it this
way. Just one time I "cloned" the entire 2 partition drive.
But on the other side of the coin, can you create an image of one
partition, then just restore that image to a newly create partition of
the right size? Granted you have to do the partition manually.
