it's likely that your friends
pc needed a tune up and
when you simply tried to
free up some memory
by disabling startups,
it only compounded the
issue your friend already
had.
perhaps, one of the startups
you disabled was actually one
for a malicious software or
incompatible software like
norton av.
my suggestion is to forget
about making a boot cd.
instead, ascertain any
windows setup cd and
boot with it to permit you
to log into the disk system.
via the recovery console
then at the disk prompt run a:
chkdsk
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild.
then exit and remove
the cd.
the above commands will
break the cycling of booting
that is preventing you from
accessing the safemode or
access normal mode and
then run this:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm
the above will tune up the
disk and the registry and
also scan the system.
