I've been downloading Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool regularly to
scan my computer with XP OS (earlier), and also till today for Vista too.
However, today I noticed that the Windows Update downloading (or updating?)
the same malicious removal tool on its own. The question is - is it necessary
for me to still manually download and scan my computer for malicious
software? Or, is it automatically taken care of by Vista OS?

Thanks for your clarifications.

The MSRT is downloaded and run as part of the Second Tuesday security
updates.
The log is available at C:\Windows\Debug\mrt.log showing dates.
Also see 'Other Information' in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-sep.mspx for
example.
As you probably realise it doesn't protect, it merely removes what might
already be there.
