I have booted up in safe mode and that seems fine and takes a normal amount
of time to get up and running but when I try to boot up through the normal
login screen it takes forever as in grass grows faster. Once it gets to the
screen where the users are listed, it virutally freezes. The color bar
doesn't even move. You can here the HDD making a pattern of noises
(dttt...dt, dt, dt, dt). It has done this for awhile and would evetually boot
but now it takes 2 or 3 minutes just to get to the password window and it
goes to sleep before it ever boots. It's a Compaq laptop that orignally had
ME on it. It has a 20G hard drive and 256M of ram. It's been great for about
a year but now it's doing this. How do I tell whats running that doing this?
Thanks

PS, we ran Microsoft's online scan and it found a few things but it didn't
help this issue.

You need really to invest in a more RAM like 512 and also 20 GB at present
not much at all with hungry Apps and Games if you play one!
You need to weed out the unwanted Programs in the Add/Remove to free some
disk space untill you invest in a bigger Hard drive or a new computer.

Go through these cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .

We ran the onecare scan with it in safe mode and it found a few things but
that didn't fix it. It has been running for 45 minutes now and still has left
login screen.

Re: XP extremely slow boot up

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

What errors appear in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Re: XP extremely slow boot up

After being able to get back to the laptop and try it, I tried to boot it in
regular mode and then in safe mode and checked the event log. Here are some
items from the start up. These bring up a question. Would a bad block make it
do this. The "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" error is because a Dlink wireless device
is not working in safe mode.

Re: XP extremely slow boot up

RDT

You need to post only copies of Warnings and Errors from the last boot
in normal mode. The bad block error suggests you should run chkdsk. The
other errors arise because you have made your selection of errors from a
boot into safe mode. You need to go back to the lengthy boot into normal
mode.

Check the hard drive for bad sectors by running chkdsk c: /r. The
omission of /f is deliberate. It will not take so long and just reports.
Post a complete copy of what it says.

Re: XP extremely slow boot up

I had to set it up to run chkdsk when it rebooted so I guess it added the
switches. It found several bad clusters in software files that windows
replaced: file 14028, wuaueng.dll; file 17615, e_ds89re.dll; file 20317,
n07ese~1.log; file 35656, data1.cab; file 39288, esrdef.bin. After that it
booted up and event viewer showed these:Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESENT
Event Category: Transaction Manager
Event ID: 623
Date: 9/24/2008
Time: 9:37:17 PM
User: N/A
Computer: LAPTOP
Description:
Catalog Database (1048) The version store for this instance (0) has reached
its maximum size of 16Mb. It is likely that a long-running transaction is
preventing cleanup of the version store and causing it to build up in size.
Updates will be rejected until the long-running transaction has been
completely committed or rolled back.
Possible long-running transaction:
SessionId: 0x026003C0
Session-context: 0x00000000
Session-context ThreadId: 0x000007C0

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 9/24/2008
Time: 9:25:47 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: LAPTOP
Description:
Windows saved user LAPTOP\Caleb_2 registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Also a file named LuCallbackProxy.exe has been using a lot of CPU time.
Also I have only two users but how come I have directories for
Administrator, Administrator1, Administrator.laptop,
Administrator.laptop.000, Caleb, Caleb.laptop, Caleb_2, Guest, Default user
and Default user.windows listed under users?
Thanks alot. You guys have been great!!
