and you can download the new Ubuntu, Intrepid Ibex, from
http://www.ubuntu.com/

What you can do with Ubuntu:

Email
Surf the web
Burn CDs.
Rip CDs.
Listen to music.
Watch vidoes/DVDs.
Scan and print.
Spreadsheets.
Presentations
Newsgroups.
HTML editing.
Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc.
Make videos.
Download photos from a camera and organize them.
Translations.
Use a dictionary
Learn how to touch type.
Edit images.
Send and receive a fax.
Take screenshots.
Create .PDF files.
Create and use a data base.
Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including
Windows Live Messenger.
IRC.
Bluetooth.

and much more!

What you can't do with Ubuntu:

Worry about:
WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,
DRM,
Viruses,
Root kits,
Spyware,
and
Malware.

The reasons that Ubuntu is more secure than Windows are twofold:

1. When *anything* in Ubuntu needs updating or patching, it all comes
from the same source and a little orange star appears when any updates
or patches are available. It's a known fact that anti virus apps and
anti malware apps can only deal with nasties that are known, not the new
ones. Hence, it is very important to be updated or patched and not just
the operating system but everything that is installed on the computer.
Windows has no central updating source and the user has to be checking
constantly for updates to their programs or face the possibility of
being compromised.

2. In Ubuntu, when anything wants to install, you have to key in your
password. With Windows, you have to click on "OK" or nothing at all as
is evidenced by drive by malware. Unlike Windows, the Linux kernel is
not intertwined with a browser like Windows is with Internet Explorer
and the kernel is kept away and protected from the user account.

You still haven't replied to my post about Yahoo Messenger. Why is that?
Is it because you posted LIES and don't want to own up to your mistakes?

Programs you can't use with Ubuntu:

Most video games.

Specialized programs like CAD.

So, if you're a gamer, keep an XP box around for games. If you're one of
the less than 1% of users that need Windows Only software, keep an XP
box around for that too.

Not at all..

People like Yahoo Messenger because it is the same as all of their friends
use, and they can help each other out with problems..

Programs that don't work with Ubuntu go much further than just CAD..

Also, setting up dual displays is anything but easy..

At least give people the whole picture..

No different from Pidgin. I IM with Windows Yahoo users all the time.
Neither can take you directly to Yahoo Chat which you said the Windows
version will and it won't.

And had I said "just" CAD, you would have a point but I didn't. I said
"like" CAD.

Most people don't have dual displays, especially with the panoramic
monitors available today.

When are you going to own up to lying about Yahoo?

That's been fixed in Intrepid, btw.

Yahoo messenger will take you into Yahoo chat..

Open Yahoo Messenger

Click on the Messenger tab

Halfway down the list is ...

YAHOO CHAT..

Check up stuff before typing lies..

"like CAD" or almost any other commercial program available from the same
store as people by their computers..

No, most people don't have dual displays, and a good job too while one is
sitting on Ubuntu..

You don't have the decency to give people the whole Ubuntu picture. You lack
integrity and technical know how. Just what kind of service do you offer
other than the obvious?

Like what? Some specific to MS-Windows only program for someone unwilling
to change? There are now counterparts for everything but for closed minds.

Or do you mean Office tools? I have used Open Office exclusively now for
many years. As the ING guy says, "Save your money..." as there are things
Open Office does than MS-Office cannot. Best part is it works on 99% of the
OSes out there including the flawed MS-Windows series including Vista. I
don't have to learn 2-3 sets of office tools as I switch between MS-Windows
and UNIX/Linux X-Windows.

I stand corrected. I don't know anyone that uses it. That said, Pidgin
will do the same thing, albeit you have to know to which room you are
going. It will also do it for MSN and ICQ groups.

You said Pidgin can't do it and you were wrong. I said Yahoo Windows
Messenger can't do it and I was wrong.

These programs are not used by many people. Period. And those who do
probably already have an XP box with it/them loaded.

See above. I'm not offering a service here at all, other than promoting
Ubuntu for non geeks like me. No one is an expert in "technical know
how" and I have never claimed to be one. Do you?

Now, give us the "whole picture" of Vista, including all the technical
work that went into creating it, the bugs, the patches, everything. That
would take you a long time, now wouldn't it?

Then use Red Hat. There are CAD programs on it that don't exist in
MS-Windblows anything. In fact, Autocad is a toy compared to what is
available in Linux. It also scales better. There are also UNIX/Solaris
workstations that do the same. Want 64GB of RAM and 2-4 displays, quite
easy actually. Multiple display issues is a MS-Windows issue not a Linux
issue.

Did you know it is also easy for Linux to have 2 keyboards and assign one
each to multiple display so 2 people can use the same computer at the same
time and not hammer each other?

> At least give people the whole picture..

The whole picture? Simple, MS-Windows is a massive kludge for the masses.
Not really good at anything in particular, but makes a general purpose
vendor locked PC. It isn't a power workstation by any means. Virtually
every technology in MS-Windows is a proprietary bastardization of xNIX and
open standards. If you want the cutting edge in performance and computing
futures, MS-Windows isn't on the plate.

While Microsoft is in the list, near the bottom and no one takes them
seriously as the systems submitted for MS are for posterity as no one
actually uses the configuration, but the problems Linux/UNIX gets are real:

You might want to ask the MVP if MS has solved the issue where both the GPUs
must be the same type. Last I checked, MS-Windows had big problems if you
used a nVidia on board chip with a dual ATI add on card for 3 displays.
Works nice on Fedora.

Yahoo users help each other.. if one of them switched to Pidgin, they would
not get help from others because the others would not have a visual on what
Pidgin looks like. These people do not understand technical terms. They use
visuals like 'fourth one along which looks like a phone'..

Programs and applications on the store shelves are definitely NOT found in
any XP installation..

You tailor your arguments too much with this 'most people don't use them'.
You don't care if they do or don't as long as you get your anti-MS message
across.

You deliberately mislead computer users, and that is unacceptable at any
level..

Re Vista patches, yes, Vista gets patches, as does every other OS. Every OS
has bugs, so much so that apart from patches, Ubuntu has to be released
every six months. Each version is effectively a service pack.

Re technical know how, try calling in at your local Pharmacia for some.

You might also want to learn to assess a computer users needs before
recommending a platform change..

Hahahaha.. too funny.. you had to rely on backup. And there was not one
single mention of Ubuntu in all or any of that. In fact, there was no
mention of any regular desktop operating system.. but you wouldn't know that
would you..

Did you read this part?

"Multiple display issues is a MS-Windows issue not a Linux issue."

So it is Microsoft's fault that dual display doesn't work in Linux desktop
distros?

Dual display was available for Windows 98!!

Less than 1% is what I said.

No, I don't. You are lying, which is typical of MVPs when they run out

You didn't explain Vista at all but you recommend it to everyone without
considering their needs. IOW, you're a lying hypocrite who needs to get
down off his high moral horse and join the rest of us.

I recommend what is best for the user. You just mislead people.

All you do is make wild claims, which when refuted, you start the insulting
part..

What is misleading about the above ? Nothing I see. Are you claiming that
Ubuntu is not capable of doing those things ?

Which things? His original list? The stuff he missed out of what Ubuntu will
not do?

Are you just acting like you didn't understand the question ? Or you
really don't understand it ?

But to appease you, what can't you do with it ? Tell me.

That is, other than run s/w that is written for a different OS, or
develop s/w for a different OS w/o running some type of virtualization.

Which, incidentally, means nothing in this context, since really, s/w is
but a tool used to produce/view some type of data, whether it be graphics
files, audio, a document, an e-mail, etc. If a different application for
a different OS can create/use/view/store/send & recevie the exact same
data, then yes, it can do that task.
