Alright alright I know, fools from google will come here spamming this forum for invites. Oh well. (Admins, watch the number of members on this forum triple!;))

Anyways, with that aside, who wants gmail?

I didnt want to be too mean to the forum owners, so I decided to come up with a little system to prevent googlers from spamming this forum. You must be a "long time" registered member. Aka, if I see you registered today, on the day of this post, then no, bye. (Heh, sorry to ye who registered today and happened to find this post).

I got 3 invites. Googlers (or any guys using search engines to come across this post for that matter), dont bother.

Whee.

2 people PMed me. 2 invites given out. One more left. Not sure about coldfusion244.

Note: You need to give me your email address so I can invite you (how am I supposed to send u an invite without your email address?

Im actually pretty surprised. That actually took quite longer than I expected (I expected "I WANT AN INVITE" within minutes...!).

Well, Id like to say a few words about gmail, for those that are interested:

-One GB.
-Fast
-Google Search Technology
-KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS ^^
-Folders
-Strong junk mail screener
-Messages are grouped in conversations, just like instant messages.
-Free POP3 Access (aka you can use Outlook)
-Free email forwarding
-One freakin GB.

Some people are getting away by the Targeted Advertisements feature in gmail. What happens is, a computer (not a person) scans your email message. It tries to pick out the "subject" of your email message and delivers advertisements accordingly. Youll be surprised at how amazing it is:

I was talking to a friend about buying fan controllers and what brand ...etc to buy. Looking at his response (convo style :D), I saw to the right (off to the side, aka not bothering the contents of the actual email) about 5 or 6 different AdSense advertisements about Fan Controllers. Prettty leet.

Heh. (Theres a little more. But whatever.)

Some feel that this feature is an infringement of privacy. Id like to say that it really isnt. I mean a computer is doing this for you.

Oh and, these ads - they dont become part of the email message. Only the gmail user sees them... off to the side.

So yeah, theres my reasons to get gmail of the day.

Who wants GMAIL? 1GB? I cant use my 250Mb in Hotmail, worst, I cant use 1Mb of my hotmail account, do you really need 1GB???? you will not use it for company purpose are you? what other use you can give to it? store really old mails? junk mail? transfer MP3s, remember that doing that youre breaking a couple laws, so who cares about 1Gb.
I recieve 400 emails everyday in the companys account, and I dont have 1Gb used, 80% of the mails end deleted, so tell me a good reason to get GMAIL.

Cheers

(Shhh..)

Just kidding. The space for me is just an added bonus. Youre right - ever since hotmail upgraded to 250 MB, gmail seems sort of... ishy.. and pointless. I mean hell, 3 years ago I was crazy for ten MB :). The main reason I wanted it becuase hotmails junk filters SUCK. I have over 50 word filters + I set the highest junk filter, and I get flooded with mails every day. Since theyve upgraded to 250 MB, I havent deleted any junk. Earlier with 2 MB if I didnt check my mail for more than 2 days, Id go over my limit - and that was the reason I wanted something like gmail. It was only the junk that screwed me over. Yeah, now theres no need for gmail (for me), but hell why not use it if you can have it. Right?

Advantages over hotmail:
Space (who needs it.... honestly, in reality youre never going to use it, but youre safe to know that you have it)
Bragging rights (Even though some feel theres no need, others want this badly ;))
Conversations (Uncluttered mailbox)
Good for slow connections (Fast + No popups at all)

Disadvantages over hotmail:
Cant use it on Messenger (Maybe therell be a Google Messenger :D)
Invite-Based only (Once the beta gets over, itll be "normal")
Switching over to gmail is a pain (you have to tell everone your new address...etc)

So all Im saying is, yeah there might be no real need. But if you have a choice between something and something better, why not take the better thing? Telling everone your address, changing your email in workgroups/newsletters/forums/mailing lists - Yeah youre right. However, if you can get over that then youve got a better deal.

If you go to a shop and find a $20 item, but next to it if you see the same type of item, except it was better, and reduced from $30 to $20, what would you take? Would you take the first item (which youve used before and you know how it works), or would you take the second item (which is better, but youve never tried it before). As for me - Id take the better item. If theyre the same price why not get the better one?

edit. I got IMed by a person (whose name I wont mention here) who told me that I was wrong and hotmail and gmail didnt cost money. Note for the slow: Reread the above paragraph and then tell me where it syas that gmail went on sale from $30 to $20.

You mean there are laws against that kind of stuff??? I never heard of the e-mail task force....

Just so everyone knows and doesnt jump off the deep end, which Ive seen happen here, I am being sarcastic...

Im not talking about storing emails or junk, piracy is a federal crime, so, yeah, transfering MP3s using a peer to peer software is a crime, using email is a crime, so my point is, who cares about 1Gb for storage.

At the possibility of sounding like an <explicitive deleted>, iebidan you make it sound as though you have never done anything wrong.... 1 GB of storage helps me when I have to zip and send source to myself... I used to have hotmail, but when my box was full....

Some things I like to keep there (like pictures of friends and such) so that I can go anywhere and show people... It also works really well for backup purposes... Just email it to yourself and keep it on their servers, plus a hard copy so im always fine if anything would happen... Yeah I have remote access to all of my computers, but why bother....

So 1GB is worth it, not to mention the fact that messages are set up like conversations which makes it very very simple to remember what is being talked about when you have those friends that just drone on and on...

Enough of my own ramblings.

I think I saw somewhere that you can use GMail as another <disk>drive somehow. Anybody know anything about this?

To carry Pentiums torch just a bit further...

The best part about Gmail is the interface. Gmail has the first truly inovative way of reading. sorting, and storing email that I have ever seen. Conversations?!? How brilliant is that? Its so beautiful it makes me want to cry. And to boot its wicked fast...lightning fast. AND you can search your mail (whcih after about 100 messages gets pretty unweildy in any client) with google technology. But really, its all about the interface and how the data is organized. Its just wonderful.

Thanks Coldfusion, all setup and working now.

Can i now invite someone else? If so can you please tell me how?
