Windows is not letting me log on

I have been trying to move my boot partition off of my noisy hard drive onto
a new quiet hard drive. I first tried copying and pasting my whole C: drive
to my brand new SATA hard drive. after rebooting the system it had a hard
time rebooting again. I had to go into bios and reset the right boot
priority. it would not boot to the new SATA hard drive because i did not do
it properly with the proper program. I did not want to delete what was on it
to properly do it. so i wanted to use a smaller PATA HDD and used the Seagate
program that came with the computer. I used a process that would take the
boot off of the old drive and put it onto the transfering drive. well 75%
through the process while it was to "copying" the information the computer
went into screen saver mode while i was away. when i came back to check it
the computer was frozen up but the light on the front was to blinking as
though it were still working. i tried ctr+alt+del many times on it would not
unfreeze. so i held my power button to shut it down. when i tried to reboot
my system it gets to the windows logo and what would normally be the screen
that would let me click on a profile and have it load up is now a log on to
windows, window that has my name instead of my profile filled into a box
requesting a password i do not have set. when i try to log in using no
password it tells me that it's logging out and either freezes or goes back to
the log on screen. it wont let me into my computer. i've tried safe mode and
i get the same thing. Please help i do not want to reinstall windows again
for the 5th time or so, and loose everything. again!

note: I have many other xp computers in my house and the Vista basic laptop
i am using.

You don't say what system you are trying to copy, but the key of a
successful duplication is to have the new drive enumerate the same as the
old one during the first boot.

My computer is using xp professional but not the x64 edition i dont think.

The advice I gave is even more necessary for XP, either version. The key to
a successful copy is to make sure that the copy is enumerated the same as
the original before it is first booted. Simply, if the current system
enumerates as C, the copy must be on the first primary partition on the
first drive in boot priority in the BIOS. Other configurations can get
complicated.

Idk know if the program performing the operation did that or not. copying was
75% complete before the system froze. windows is showing up but letting me
log in. it acts like its gonna and then it imediately tells me it's logging
off and goes back to the previous screen even use of the "Administrator
account is not working." Is there any way at all to fix what you where
talking about with a 75% copied drive without getting into the OS to do it.
Or will i have to reinstall windows on the drive i intended to copy the boot
to.

Up in the above i meant not letting me log in. when i try to boot from the
incomplete drive it says "windows could not start because the following file
is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll please reinstall a copy of the above file.

AceViper,

Have you tried running a repair install? Boot from the XP CD, select the
option to repair the installation.

Is your old system working, but only the hard drive needs to be replaced.
If the old system is working, I would recommend that you download and try
BootItNG to copy the old system to the new drive.

that's what i originally intended to do using a seagate disk. except my old
system will not let me log in to it at all with safe-mode administrator or
anything. almost like a virus. and the new system never finished copying. i'd
like to use another computer but it turns out that mine is the only one using
HDD's in the FAT32 format so sticking the hard drives in another computer
wont work unless im wrong about being the only one.

Then I would run the repair on the old system first and see if you can get
it back to booting. Just what are the symptoms of hell? Error messages,
sparks, etc.

lol my definition of hell with computers is being at risk of loosing all my
crap cuz i cant get into it or solve the problem. sparks would add to it,
though its never happened before.

Ok sorry to come back with this problem still but, this is what i've managed
to do...
I tried repairing the original drive and it attempted to repair it but
during the repair it blue screened and now it is stuck their at that spot. It
will always show the blue "windows has been stopped to prevent..." screen. I
need to get into that profile to get my images and other documents off of it.
anytime i try to use my new profile to access my documents on the old hard
drive it says access denied. is their a way to get around it. i just want my
documents back. i can't copy them or anything.

You can take ownership of the data and then you can copy. How are you
trying to copy? Are you dual booting and trying to copy from the other
drive, or from the recovery console.

I am now booting from a different drive. I Don't know how to gain ownership
of my old profile on the other drive.

The new boot has just had all drivers, updates, and service pack 2
installed. it's Surprising that the computer has never ran this fast before.
it's so quick on this fresh windows installation.

If you are using XP and are a member of the Administrators group 1. Right
click on the file or folder icon ( I would use the highest folder from which
you want to copy) and chose Properties 2. On the security tab, click the
Advanced button (this should open the advanced security settings dialog box)
3. Click the owner tab. This should show the current owner and show you
and the administrator group as potential owners) 4. Select either name and
click OK.
See if that helps you. We can troubleshoot the permissions if necessary.

There is no security tab with an advanced button. I am using the regular
windows xp pro. not x64.
