Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Hi there, as any a little experienced user knows taking driver updates from
windows update is optional and only recommanded for Microsoft hardware
drivers, other drivers if needed ( if it ain,t broke do not try to fix it)
should be taken from the manufacturers webiste.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

I am a very experieced user.. since the Comodore days..
I accepted the update today and I knocked out the video on my HP Tablet with
an Intel Video Chipset..

This was the first of my 6 pc's with Vista on it that I updated today and I
didn't think anything of it when I choose to install it.
I'm not running an ATI card so it should not have effected my pc..

It's easy to say don't install hardware drivers from MS..
But these days I tend to rely on the MS drivers on my laptops and tablet.
They have always run better than when I install 1 year or older drivers from
the Vender of the laptop.

I do not however install MS drivers on my gaming gear.. but that pc is
assemebled from parts and throughly researched.

So with that out of the way , shall we discuss the more important thing of
how to uninstall this update?
I can not find it anywhere for the unistall.
I have found all the system updates but not the optional ones.

Thanks

Michael Evans

Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

I just (stupidly) installed this update on my HP DV6000 and it has
screwed not only my display, but my USB as well.

If anybody figures out how to back this one out I'd love to hear about
it!

Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Had the same problem. Fortunately, the solution is fairly simple: Go to
device manager, open 'System Devices', right-click on the offending
driver and select 'Uninstall'. Marvel as dozens of drivers will stop
working... but Windows re-installs them without much of a problem, and
- in my case - after 2 restarts, the situation was back to normal.
Hope this helps!

RE: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Go to Device Manager, open the “System devices” node, then right click and
Uninstall the “3GIO Filter Driver”. Make sure you click the “Delete the
driver from your system” checkbox. After a few restarts the correct drivers
should be back in use.

RE: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Thanks Dan!
That was a big help, I hadn't had time to go looking for where the device
was hiding..

WTF!!! What kind of driver is that.. as soon as I unistalled it it basically
reinstalled 10 system devices including my mass storage device, usb root hubs
, wired net adapter, wireless adapter, etc..

All is good now.. but how could MS release a driver like that?
I've checked 2 of my other Vista machines and it is showing up..

Does it not auto detect the hardware and suggest drivers..?
My tablet has an Intel On Board video so it should not of even show up for
me to download in theory..

Anyway thanks again..

Mike

Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Not all installation fail! I got VIA chip-set and this driver is
fitting.

My old clunker (custom build Prescott 3.4, 8GB RAM, *) loves this
driver. I install driver only if it is applicable.

RE: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

I've been setting up a new Fujitsu U1010 UMPC and after installing a 93Mb
Vista Update including the optional items, I found my screen resolution
dropped to 800 x 600 & couldn't be budged; I also had a Device problem
showing in my Display Adaptor suggesting another item was taking away its
resources. I'm glad I stumbled onto this site. I simply went to Device
Manager and System Devices where I found the ATI 3GIO Filter Driver and
uninstalled it. After a restart, the monitor resolution is back to 1024 x 600.

One problem remains... Why have I had 2 identical log-in buttons at start-up
since installing the Vista upgrades?

RE: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

I had the same problme on my Dell XPS200 w/Intel 82945G graphics. I'm not
sure Why MS downloaded this update to my computer. I don't have an ATI
chipset, but this errant update really hosed up the computer.

I had to go into Device Manager and remove the ATI PCI Express (3GIO)
Filter Driver ("delete driver files" checked). After several minutes and a
couple of re-boots the system came up and reinstalled all the original
drivers (except video).

What a disaster! I'm really considering looking at a Mac.

Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Hi there,

I think you are missing the point: MS update drivers are in 99% of the case
older drivers than the manufacturers.

If your hardware works fine: leave it be working fine, only update if is is
neccasary because the hard ware is not working well.

Another driver will not make your hardware run 10% faster or better or make
your printer use less ink..

If you did not take the commonly spread advice, than try rolling back on the
driver, system restore or a repair.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Re: Avoid ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver update for Vista

Windows Update is a Valuable Service, yes or no?
It's part of what we expect we're paying for when we install non-shareware OS.
I furthermore expect anything from the Windows Update pipeline to be at
least benign, if not beneficial; also self-limiting if attempted in
inappropriate context.

On my system, (On Windows Vista Home Premium, Acer Aspire AST690-UD214A,
Display adapter = onboard Intel 946GZ Express Chipset Family, ...) onboard
display driver was "crowded out" by the ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver;
Device Manager show the Yellow Bang (!) and "resource conflict -- must remove
some other device" [inexact wording.]

THEY GOT ME

THEY GOT ME

THOSE BASTARDS GOT ME. WHY did i download that? I knew I didnt need it but I wasnt sure, I gave ms too much trust. Took me hours to figure this out. It disabled my mouse and keyboard. Even when you boot in safemode it still loads this ATIpcie driver. Only way I could find to fix it was to system restore from the windows disk !

Hi There

Go to www.amd.com to get your ati drivers, Microsoft is the wrong place for
an updated driver IF needed.

Re: THEY GOT ME

Re: THEY GOT ME

Hi there,

Optional drivers, read the treath and do NOT take any non MS drivers from
windows Update.

System restore can be usefull if you did not follow the advice.

Michel Denie

Valuable service - yes.
Perfect - no.

It has been explained before - many times - on these newsgroups by many
different people that relying on the Windows Updates for hardware drivers
should *not* be done. The hardware drivers that appear there have to be
submitted to Microsoft by the hardware vendors anyway. They have to pay for
the priviledge to have them placed there. There is also a process through
which the drivers to be placed there have to go through to get the
'logo'/'certified'. That all takes time. By the time it is done - usually
several releases from the manufacturer have passed by - sometimes solving
issues with that original driver, sometimes just new features, sometimes
nothing major.

Due to the fact that the driver provided by Microsoft's updates for products
that are non-Microsoft can be older than 'the latest' -> it's usually better
*not* to take the chance. Just because it passed through whatever 'process'
to get the logo/certification does not mean there are not problems with it -
problems that the manufacturer may have found and repaired in later versions
of the driver that they have chosen not to pay Microsoft to test/certify/put
up for them.

The Microsoft update process is (surprisingly - like everything else) not
perfect. Things can and will go wrong - particularly when you throw in the
pure number of variables you speak of when talking about computers and
changing things across millions of them. You can help limit exposure to
problems a bit by changing the downloads to something more manual where
possible or getting the updates manually completely and reading about them
first. The suggestions in these newsgroups about hardware drivers have
almost always been the same:

- Don't update hardware drivers unless it fixes something (or you think it
might fix something) you are actually having trouble with (or if you just
have to have the new feature it might have in it.)
- When updating hardware drivers - get them from the manufacturer of said
hardware. If Microsoft had nothing to do with the creation or support of
the hardware originally - why trust them for it now?

If you had an Intel video card, and knew it - why would you download an ATI
driver? Especially if it was an optional update and you had to choose to do
so?
