Re: Merry Christmas

Thanks for the translation Dave and the same to you and yours.

Was the update one of the last lot, if so without going into my history
don't know whether I have it or not, if it was a critical one then I would.
I do know I have a slight slow down when going some places but I can live
with it <g>

If you have; C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB942615$
You have it installed and was pushed pushed this past Patch Tuesday.

Re: Merry Christmas

Odd, I looked with Belarc and that update does not appear on my machine. I
am set for 'auto' updates, however, I screen them before installation. This
doesn't look like one I would have rejected. Mike, would it be best to wait
for the next offering? I looked at the reasons for installation and I am
not experiencing any of the items this was intended to fix. I do have 6ea.
KB94XXXX installs, 5 of which are dated 12/12/07, but, 942615 is not amongst
them.

Another question, is there any reason to keep the "blue" uninstall files,
i.e. $NtUninstallKBXXXXX$...?? I have them all the way back to 2005!!! I
would think anything more than a month or so old could be dumped. (I have
tons of space and just never bothered to get rid of them, plus, I wasn't
sure if I should <g>)

Dave or Mike or anyone.....
Is there any reason to keep the older $NtUninstallKBxxxxx$ files? What
is a good 'rule of thumb' to keep them around? i.e. a month, two months,
just long enough to see if there is a problem?

Old ones ? No!

Sort folders by date. Those older than say 2 months, delete.
BTW: The folders are blue because they are marked with the NTFS Compression attribute to
save some disk space.

The patch was to protect IE from various possible malicious exploits so
I'm pleased to read that you feel you have experienced none but that's not
a reason for not installing the patch. However I find it odd that
KB942615 wasn't offered as I think it should have been offered to all PCs
running either XP SP2 or Vista but not to those running beta software such
as XP SP3 or Vista SP1. If installed it should appear in Add/Remove
Programs if you have "show updates" checked, and, as David mentioned, the
uninstall files should either be in the folder
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB942615$ if you are running IE6 or
C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates\KB942615-IE7 if running IE7.

As for deleting the $NtUninstallKBXXXXX$... folders and their contents
this very much depends on whether you think you will ever want to
uninstall the associated patch, if not then they can be safely deleted
although I would strongly recommend that you don't delete the uninstall
files for any patch installed in say the last two months "just in case".

Re: Merry Christmas

David,

Don't forget that if running IE7 the uninstall files will be in
C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates\KB942615-IE7 rather than
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB942615$.

Re: Merry Christmas

Thanks Dave!! Yeah, I knew about the compression making them show blue. I
just never bothered to dump them because space was not a factor. They are
beginning to accumulate since '05, <g>.

Re: Merry Christmas

Whoa! Stop the show! Mike, Dave....what is this???
I just went into Windows Explorer for the house cleaning and the first file
in J:\Windows is $hg_mig$ . It is not compressed (not blue). I looked at
it and it contains all the KB's dl'd in 2007, nothing more.
Surprisingly, this $hg_mig$ folder contains the KB942612-IE7 !!! Only six
of the files have the '-IE7' suffix and none of them are the uninstall
files. Again, what is this?
Heirloom, old and becoming quite confused

Grrrr. Went back to the $hf_mig$ folder, hit Refresh and almost all of the
KB downloads now show, but, are not the uninstall files. The question
remains......

Look again or even better read my earlier post <g> where I stated that if
you had IE7 installed the IE7 patch uninstall files are stored in
C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates\KB942615-IE7

Re: Merry Christmas

How about checking the box in Add/Remove that says "show updates" (top
right)? Either that or read my posts where I have already mentioned this.
<vbg>

Since you have IE7 installed KB942615 should appear as:
"Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB942615)"
indented below "Windows Internet Explorer 7 - Software Updates"
but only if you have "show updates" checked at top right and to the left
of "Sort by".

Goodness, I can sure tell I didn't get enough sleep last night! (about to
fall asleep now)
Mike, you have the patience of Job, thanks for putting up with the likes of
me. You are most correct in all points, as usual. I did check the 'show
updates', but, the first time it did not work...when I scrolled the list,
the checkmark was removed....so, I thought the files were not there. I went
back, did it again and this time, they all appeared. And, I do have an ie7
Windows folder in blue and an ie7uninstall folder, as well. All is good.
Heirloom, old and I can take a nap now

Lordy, my brain's aching!! These Texans!! FWIW, I have it in
Add/Remove and the blasted IE7 folder. And I also rarely use IE7 at
all, so tried it to see if there was any problems......none so far.
