I forgot to mention that Vista needs more CPU power to do the same functions
than older OS's needed,
CPU power means more watts, and that means more electrical energy needed.
Plus it needs a high end power draining video card just function normally if
you want all the features...
I have seen cards than need huge amounts of power and have large air
blowers!

What is this? A computer or an oven? 500 - 600 watts for 1 computer? THIS IS
CRAZY!

This whole concept lacks GRACE and elegance!!!
Vista is a bloated monster... and a DISGRACE!

I WISH FOR THIS:

The next version of windows (windows 7)
be redesigned from scratch to be very compact, lightweight, fast, with
wisdom and care for the earth and the people.

I would like to see computers that can run on less than 20 watts.. it can be
done...
Of course the hardware plays the biggest role.. but the OS can also lead the
way by being more efficient.

You have no idea what you're talking about.
Get lost you idiot!

Re: Addition to Previous Energy post (aka, vista is a crime to humanity)

You do not need to consume more energy to achieve better CPU performance.
The increase in CPU clock speed, number of cores and other internal
optimizations in CPU design that lead to greater CPU performance are
accompanied by a reduction in die size and fabrication process that result
sin lower power consumption figures for more performance.
For example the next generation of Intel CPU on a 45nm fab will be dual and
quad core at greater then 3GHz clock speed and consumer less power at full
speed then a light bulb (approx 60W). Also the technology allows for then
to back off clock speed and even shutdown a core if high levels of
performance is not required.

I assume your figures of 500 to 600W for a PC re not just based on the size
of a power supply they have fitted as again it does not work that way - just
because you put a 600W power supply in your PC does not mean it is using
600W
If did it would mean your PC in a US household was pulling nearly 6amps
again not the case.

WRONG
given the same cpu, it works harder on vista than older OS.
some laptop cpus can go into a lower power state if not in use...however
with indexing and defrag services runnng in the background
vista ensures more power use.

you are wrong AGAIN..

install a 350w power supply to a modern pc with a high end display adaptor
and you will see that it will not be enough

it will destoy the ps unit... new pcs have 500w psu's and they need that
power.

Maybe you should read what I actually wrote before you go shouting WORNG
everywhere.

I never mentioned the same CPU working harder under Vista - my point was
that on a modern PC with a later model of processor (remember the vast
majority of home user sales of Vista are by OEM - the retail market is
insignificant, so they are getting Vista on a newer PC with a newer
processor so your comparison is only valid for tiny fraction of the vista
users out there) that can be more powerful in terms of processing capability
it will actually draw less then a previous generation of processor.
The latest generation of Intel CPUs will have a 2W mode as well for
extremely low power usage scenarios.

Again more modern device will run in lower power modes even with low
priority services such as indexing are running, again the default time for
defrag and update are in the middle of the night when your PC will be idle
and drawing a fraction of the power during full operation.

Re: Addition to Previous Energy post (aka, vista is a crime to humanity)

not realy...

3d desktop can be achieved with low power chips,
(see beryl, linux)
it is vista that implemented this badly needing monster cards.

and of course technology will progress, unlike the vista leap backwards.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Newer computers use less
power than older computers.

Mike

What you should do

What you should do

Best thing you can do is place your computer in your oven, say 450 for about
30 minutes. That should take care of the problem

hi bozobreath..I AM talking about windows

beryl was just an example of 3d achieved with lesser cards. MS can do it
too.

when I had vista my pc WAS the oven.. heating up due to 100s of crap running
all the time.

people complain about vista hard drive thrashing all the time... why
complain? cook an egg on the hard drive!

Er, no they don't! You have no idea what you are talking about. What time
frame are you talking about here? You are only talking about the last year
or so, since the Core 2 processors came out.

Re: Addition to Previous Energy post (aka, vista is a crime to humanity)

I read what you said and i know what the future is..
you must compare 2 os on the same hardware...

for now bake an egg on a cpu and hdd runnng vista

xp is better there too! less waste of energy... heck, xp is better in
everything
