Trouble with new display and Device Manager

I had trouble getting the right drivers installed for my Viewsonic LCD.
Essentially I ended up booting up the machine with no drivers and Windows
installed a Default Monitor. After finally getting the correct drivers
installed on my computer the correct drivers where installed but the
computer still thinks there's an unknown monitor attached to the machine and
keeps recreating the Default Monitor at start-up.

How do I fix this false detection of an unknown monitor ?

The way the monitor is listed is not important...
as long as your colors and resolution are OK, that's all you need to worry
about.

The settings for your *video card *are what you need to set...especially if
it's a wide screen

Allow it to install the default monitor, then go into Device Manager and
mark it as disabled.

Nvidia video card? They alway have "defaul monitor" listed. No big
deal, leave it alone.

(1) Boot to Safe Mode
(Hold F5 as you boot or CTRL for the Startup Menu)
(2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
(3) Open the Monitors branch, & Remove all entries.

Perhaps, FIRST, even in Normal Mode, note what is
currently installed. That is...
(a) D-Clk the monitor there for Properties, Driver tab.
(b) Click the Update Driver button, then "Next".
(c) Bolt "Display a list...", & click "Next".
(d) Bolt "Show all hardware".
Examine the two panes to see what is currently installed.
That is likely what you wish to end up with, after step (4).

(4) Boot to Normal Mode.

Hopefully, the correct monitor will be rediscovered & installed & the
other will be gone.

That's what I was looking for, but I couldn't remember. I've seen
technicians clear all devices and let the system rebuild from scratch.

There were a lot of Plug & Play entries in Safe Mode view of Device Manager
that were cleaned up but unfortuately that Default monitor is still being
redetected.

Perhaps the Display Adapter is the problem, maybe it remembers it has two
monitors ? Should I remove it in the Device Manager first, and let the
system rebuild before trying to remove the Default monitor ?

Hmm. Too bad the unknown monitor wouldn't go too.

(a) You have both a Default Monitor & a Viewsonic LCD showing
up under the Monitors branch in Device Manager?
(b) Did you remove them both before rebooting as instructed?
(c) What is highlighted in step 3d of my prior instructions for
each of them, when you "Show all hardware"?

It could be worth a try. Important: At the point below where you "bolt
'Show all hardware'", ensure you copy down what is in the left & right
panes. Then, if you have no other way to get back your current display
adapter, you may go back into that screen to select it.

Next, return to the adapter screen and install an adapter that matches
your video card. This may or may not be the adapter that you are
using now. Examine the materials you received with your computer to
see if they include a CD-ROM or floppy disk that contains the correct
video adapter. Or go to the Gateway website and see if they have an
adapter for you to download. Or check the website of the company that
made your video card.

I have a 15" LCD monitor attached to a PCI graphics card. Device
Manager does not show a Default Monitor, only a "Diamond View DV152".

FWIW, the DDC pins, which are required for PnP, are not present in my
VGA cable. This is because I'm going through a KVM box and I have used
an extension cable from an old non-DDC monitor. DDC allows the monitor
to communicate its capabilities to the graphics card, thus providing
PnP support. By disabling DDC, I effectively have a non-PnP monitor.

!!!Yes I have "Viewsonic" in the left window and "%VCDTS21367-1%" in the
right window. Unfortunately when I select the VP930 Series entry in the
right window, it wants the CD_ROM but can't find the files it wants (even
though I know they are there). This is the scenario that caused the
creation of the Default Monitor in the first place, the machine couldn't get
the drivers off the CD-ROM for some silly reason.

!!!I've sent an e-mail to Viewsonic asking if this driver "%VCDTS21367-1%"
is appropriate, and if not how to change it. I'm also not sure where the
driver installer placed all the drivers.

Alright, then. That was all done right. I still am studying the stuff
you posted earlier. I see nothing especially wrong yet, except for the
gobbledygook in your Update Driver requestor & the fact this Default
Monitor won't go.

Have you tried deleting just the Default Monitor in the Registry...?...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MONITOR\DEFAULT_MONITOR

(a) "START button, Run, RegEdit".
(b) Click the plus sign to left of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".
(c) Click the plus sign left of "Enum".
(d) Click the plus sign left of "MONITOR"
(e) Click "DEFAULT_MONITOR" in the left pane.
(f) Select "Export Registry File" in the "Registry" menu.

Have it create a ".reg" file. It will contain all the information
of the Default Monitor. This can be used to restore it, if the
need may arise.

(g) R-Clk "DEFAULT_MONITOR" in the left pane, & select
to delete it.

Reboot-- are you rid of it?

By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the Registry.
To alter the default behavior...

(a) "START button, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab".
(b) Scroll to & click (highlight) "Registration Entries".
(c) Click the "Edit" button.
(d) Select (highlight) "Edit" in the window.
(e) Click the "Set Default" button.

Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open in Notepad for
examination. To merge it into the Registry, R-Clk it & select "Merge".

Click the "Device Manager" tab.
Expand "Monitors".
Double click on the "Default Monitor" device listed to open its properties.
Click the "Driver" tab > "Update Driver" button.
Click "Next".

Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the Directory\Folder\VS080114_I19.inf file

Unfortunately when I search for a file"VS080114_I19.inf" it cannot be found
on my hard drive. I think I successfuly converted to a Viewsonic monitor by
pointing to "%VCDTS21367-1%" , the driver being used for my VP930b monitor
but I still end up with two monitors, which I don't want.

That is a mess! But there is no such driver as "%VCDTS21367-1%". It

Hmm, it wouldn't work for mine, either-- until I removed the quotes.
Apparently they shouldn't be used, unless there is a space (& possibly
other special characters) involved. But no matter!

Good. My .inf is much, much smaller, & I've deleted what I consider to
be extraneous lines in yours below. I do not see that your .inf actually
creates the Registry entries for that Default Monitor-- something else
is doing it! Your .inf DOES properly create the Registry entries for the
"ViewSonic VP930 Series". And your MSInfo data looks also quite good to
me.

Comparing your abridged .inf to mine, I see nothing startlingly bad.
Although I'm not a perfect expert, my impression seems corroborated in

(a) You do actually have a... VP930_Series.ICM?
(My own EN5400e.icm is located in...

Open Explorer.
Expand the tree to C:\Windows\Inf.
Scroll through the files in the Right pane and see if VS080114_I19.inf is present in
the folder.
If it is then you need to remove the "Hidden" attribute on the INF folder. When the
folder is set as hidden you will not be able to see it using browse to get to and
select the file.

If it isn't there or you would rather get the driver files from ViewSonics support
site, they can be obtained here:
http://www.viewsonic.com/support/drivers/driver_information.cfm?category=1&formName=monitor&key=36

This is an updated file VS080115.
Create a new folder to save the file to.
Extract the contents of the file into the same folder.
Run the Setup.exe from the folder.

Right. Now, delete it, as I said below--

(g) Right-Click "DEFAULT_MONITOR" in the left pane,
& select to delete it.

That might rid you of the Default Monitor, & all that would be left to
deal with is the gobbledygook in Update Driver.

Yes, I tried deleting the Default Monitor in the Registry, I also tried a
combination of deleting the Registry entry, removing the device from Device
Manaager and removing the graphics card from Device Manager. In every
scenario the Default Monitor came back.

Hmm. Too, too bad it wasn't that easy! I omitted that you should reboot
after deleting it, but I presume you did. Sheesh! I'm still thinking. In
the meantime...

It might be advisable to take the updated driver Brian A. mentioned.
Perhaps getting it installed will then allow the Default Monitor to go.
And it would a nice surprise if it fixed that Update Driver requestor
too!
