Re: Hiding Vista volumes from XP (volsnap.sys issue revisited)

Hi, Colin.

Great job! At least, I think so. But I haven't really absorbed the whole
"Greypaper" - and this whole thread - yet because I don't really have that
issue. I've used System Restore only a few times, and I seldom boot into
WinXP anymore.

But right there in Setup One is one of my pet peeves. :>(

<paste>
In other words, I boot into XP Pro x86 to rename its system volume, and then
XP Pro x64 to name its system volume, etc.
Example: for my quad-boot AMD test box I name the system volumes as follows:
"XP Pro x86", "XP Pro x6", "Vista x86", "Vista x64".
</paste>

I agree wholeheartedly with your advice to rename those volumes! But those
are the BOOT volumes, not the SYSTEM volumes. Remember, those terms are
counterintuitive, based on legacy issues that go back at least 20 years. As
many authors have pointed out, we BOOT from the SYSTEM partition and keep
the operating SYSTEM files in the BOOT volume.

When this comes up in these newsgroups, I usually refer the poster to KB
article 314470:
Definitions for system volume and boot volume
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314470/EN-US/

As that article says, "There is only one system volume. However, there is
one boot volume for each operating system in a multiboot system." If you
just change "system volume" to "boot volume" each time it occurs in that
paragraph, I won't quibble any more. ;^}

Make that Step One. (It's really embarrassing to goof up while
criticizing.)

Re: Hiding Vista volumes from XP (volsnap.sys issue revisited)

Now that I think of it, I really don't care about boot or system. I could
just as easily have said "any volume with Vista VSS files on it." After
all, a CompletePC Backup user would not keep the images on any of the system
volumes but would save them to another volume altogether. That volume would
need to be hidden from XP as well. I haven't gone into that detail in the
GP because the user needs to work that one out based on his backup plan.

Re: Updated: Hiding Vista volumes from XP

Thanks Colin :)

I can't actually remember when I last had XP actually installed on this box.
I keep it caged in a VM these days :)

Re: Updated: Hiding Vista volumes from XP

Re: Updated: Hiding Vista volumes from XP

Hey Colin,

Just wanted to let you know, now that I am getting some critical apps
installed and running on my Vista 64 bit, I gave this a go this morning.

Worked very well, my two Vista partitions are now hidden from XP, and Vista
is retaining restore points now.

Many thanks again!
