Re: Ad-Aware

You never provide sufficient info, not even when asked for it. You deserve
no help, but your answer is the same one PA Bear gave you.

This is a new problem this is not the first time I am manually updating but
this is the first time I have this problem.

Re: Ad-Aware

OK, I'll try to be more helpful. There are several threads in the Lavasoft
forums on this, going back a week or two or more. Many users are reporting
the same thing with several different versions of the DEFs files (and I just
tested the version that came out this morning on a new install and I get the
same thing.) I downloaded today's defs using the link here and also trying
the link in the article PA cited.
http://lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ (look at upper right for
button to download.)

Don't know what's going on, but in all the threads in that forum, I get the
same basic feeling: Lavasoft will soon kill SE altogether, though why the
DEFs files they keep putting out are causing so much trouble, who knows. No,
not ALL users are having problems, but Lavasoft ain't talking.

Regardless, the hints are strong that Lavasoft will stop providing any
updates, anyway, so it's time, I think, to get rid of it.

Re: Ad-Aware

Like I said in the answer I just posted, LOTS of people have been having
this problem, especially over the last few weeks. Every thread I found in
Lavasoft forums seems to be the same -- Updates don't work for lots if not
most people, and Lavasoft has yet to respond to the issue in any sensible
terms. Like I more or less said in the other post, it's time to put AdAware
SE out to pasture for good.

you need to *unzip* the download to your Ad-Aware SE Personal
folder

If you did that, then simply try re-downloading the defs
as the download may have been corrupted.

Re: Ad-Aware

I downloaded today's DEFs five different times using as many different links
as I could locate and two different machines, though I believe they all
refer back to the same download. None of them work. Have you tried this
update process lately with any good luck?

I just downloaded the defs a minute ago to try it and found no problem...on
my win2k machine
so maybe Lavasoft has corrected the evidently bad defs.ref file (unless they
stopped win98 support???)

This is the link I used
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

Since it's working on my Win2k machine , all I can guess is that the
definitions no longer work with win98...
but that does not seem like a good explanation.
So I'll have to fire up my win98 machine tomorrow to see if I have AAW-SE
still installed on it...
and if so, try updating it

I just came across this

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/Adaware-SE-referencefile.shtml

I see win98 is no longer listed as a supported OS...
so I guess that's then end of AdAware for Win98

Spybot S&D will run on win98 however...
so maybe that can be used instead of AdAware.

Re: Ad-Aware

Other than Spybot S&D, I don't. I haven't researched which apps still
support Win9x, and I don't actually use Win98 enough to test any such app. I
leave that to others. Fact is, my *habits* are my best security, and I
haven't any serious malware on my own systems in years. I keep a good AV
active in the background, I keep the system up to date, and use
SpywareBlaster. I don't use special security settings, I don't use
replacements for IE/OE, and when I remember, sometimes after months, to scan
with many various on-demand scanners, the worst that comes up are tracking
cookies. (And a few viruses I have stashed for old times' sake.) Big deal.

Re: Ad-Aware

Good find. I was trying to figure out how to read the darned file to see if
Windows versions are listed, but that's a no-go.

Exactly.
(Which is why I usually bypass most of the alleged "security updates", which
on some occasions, often introduce a few other problems and 'gotchas' along
the way.)

What is your opinion about Spybot?

Re: Ad-Aware

I've used it for years. And I don't use many of these things. However, I DO
NOT install any of the "protections" -- I don't Immunize, don't enable
TeaTimer, or SDHelper or whatever. After installing, when it goes through
that final setup dialog, skip through that and don't do any of it. ONLY use
Spybot as an on-call scanner, updating before each use.

So you know, I consider my MAIN protection to be SpywareBlaster. That and my
AV.
