People like me, give relatives CDs with OpenOffice on it, you would be
surprised how many people will change if they had to pay for MS-Office
themselves.

If you think nobody is using it, keep your head in the sand. This is
growing faster than Linux.

Millions download it.
Millions dump it and re-install Windows.

I'm curious. Where does this number come from? Taken literally it means that
Linux will be on more desktops than Vista in 100 months, but we all know that
isn't going to happen. ;) At least not with the current technologies.
Actually, less than 8ish years because I've seen this number in this forum
before but I can't find any references to it in our friend Google.

Re: Moshe Goldfarb is Micoshaft Corporation

Re: Moshe Goldfarb is Micoshaft Corporation

When the fax machine was invented it was absolutely useless until the second
was was made. The value of the first machine has increased exponentially as
each machine came on line and has virtually no bounds. Linux or ANY open
system product by design has a peak. It will have early adopters, ramp up,
and then ramp down just as quickly due to it's premise. Its downfall is its
strength, open systems. The more you let people make changes, the more the
systems become non-interoperable. So the early people buy and use it, they
make changes, they isolate each other due to "independent greatness, each
one trying to outdo each other". Then they die. QED. "And that's the way
it is."

My neighbor recently went back to school and was complaining about
having to buy MS office for her writing class. I gave her a copy of
the Open CD with OpenOffice on it. She is thrilled with it. Zero
problems saving and submitting her papers in Word format. She has
thanked me the last two times I've seen her. She was also going
to try Xubuntu on an old Win98 laptop, but I haven't talked to her
in a while and don't know how that went.

Yup, OO is growing, and along with Firefox can help grease the wheels
toward eventual Linux migration.

And in both cases the makers of the programs - OO and FF - have shown they
realize the benefit of making apps that fit the paradigms of Windows or Mac.
Such work is, surely, not easy - but it is clearly a benefit.

Dog, you were on a roll until you had to throw in that "eventual linux
migration" stuff. That belongs in some alt.fantasy group, not here.

Eh? If we can't indulge our fantasies of Linux world domination in
a Linux advocacy group... why post anything here? >:)

Seriously though, I've actually seen a fair number of successful
Linux desktop migrations, and it can be made easier by replacing
the application stack first and the OS last. This is especially
true when you are migrating an entire enterprise.

Ummm, dude? The "browser" thing was invented on Unix. SunOS,
I seem to recall.

Unix went through that cycle several times and it wasn't open.

I just talked to a woman working for her husband's small business, and
she brought up OpenOffice. With regret, because she'd already purchased
an expensive Microsoft product. And was having a hard time figuring out
how to make it do what she wanted (mail-merge, I think).

There is a lot of nice open-source software out there. Why pay big
bucks unless you have to? Getting the word out is key.

You "think"? More lies.

So how did she do it with OO?

No. Getting it working properly is key.

There are NOT linux advocacy groups:
alt.os.windows-xp
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

....and this one is a Homosexual advocacy group:
comp.os.linux.advocacy

I'll grant there are a couple of linux desktops, what's it up to now, a
hundred?

Yes, there is. And on my key ring too. Always carry a USB drive with me,
never know when you meet someone that needs OpenOffice, Linux demo, PuTTy,
PGP, Wireshark or something.
