Re: AVG 8.0

mae, thanks for your information. For some strange reasons after I was
notified in my MSN email that my question had been answered I was able to
click on it and return to you answer in this forum. I have not been able to
do that before after installing AVG 8.0. Now if I was just able to open the
power point file being sent to me as well as the WMV files I would be back in
business like when I had the AVG 7.5 version. I do not have any problems
opening the power point files I had stored on my computer prior to the
installation of 8.0. This would indicate to me that something is happening to
the files coming into my MSN Email but I have not found anything yet that
would cause it. I do have a question in to the AVG technical team but it
takes them so long to answer. The last time it took them over a week to get
back to me. I was hoping that some one on this forum may had this problem
before and found a cure. Thanks mae, I will consider what you have advised.
By the way I did not install the AVG tool bar.

Re: AVG 8.0

Wayne, FWIW, I have been a avid user/fan of AVG for years now but with the
"upgrade from version 7.5 to 8, it has caused more problems than it has
fixed. EX: conflicts with other Spyware programs, false positives, etc...
After speaking with many people on Security Forums , reading online
professionial and user reviews incl: www.VirusBulletin and
av-comparatives.org then installing and testing a few myself, including
AVG8, I uninstalled AVG and now have gone to Avira Antivir. It is easier, it
is a simple straight forward AV with no extras to bog down your system and
has real tech support on it's online forum. Best of all, it's free. I dont
work for them btw, just recommending them to everyone I know.

Thanks for sharing that information with me Marx. I will definately consider
what you have said. I have never had any problem with the 7.5 AVG which I had
for two years.

Re: AVG 8.0

My main motivation is the nag screens in ver 7.5 that said support for 7.5
will end this month. Tried ver.8, absolute rubbish, so I went shopping for a
better free AV.

Re: AVG 8.0

Thanks marx. I will give it consideration. I have the commercial version of
AVG Antivirus which cost me $42.00. Hopefully they will find, and remove some
of the bugs out of it. At least for the last two times now, I have been able
to click on this link in my MSN e-mail and come back to this answer. For some
unknown reason I could not do that before. If I can figure out a way to open
the WMV files I receive I will be ok. Since I also upgraded to windows live
messenger from MSN Messenger I am beginning to wonderif that may be my
problem. The only thing that is strange is I do not have any problems opening
WMV or power point files that I had saved on my computer before installing
AVG. and windows live messenger so I don't really know which one to blame.
Although I do know that AVG did screw up my MSN Messenger and that is the
only reason I changed to windows live messenger.

Why bother with either one of those programs? You don't need them..

If you have a recurring problem do not forget you can configure your AVG
8. Advanced Setting. PUP Exceptions.

Re: AVG 8.0

Gerry, I noticed the pup within the AVG interface, but I did not think that
would pertain to small programs like WMV and power point that came in with my
MSN e-mail messages. I was thinking that was for the programs that was stored
in other areas of the computer away from the e-mail program, but I could be
wrong about that. I will definately check this out. It seems that some of the
power point programs will open and others won't and that is what puzzles me.
Thanks.

Re: AVG 8.0

Wayne

You should not get programmes in attachments. You should only be seeing
files that may be opened if you have the relevant programme to open the
file.

Software that can play WMV files include Windows Media Player, The
KMPlayer, PowerDVD, RealPlayer, MPlayer, VLC Media Player, Zoom Player
and Media Player Classic.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WMV

You need Powerpoint for a Powerpoint file.

Re: AVG 8.0

Gerry, WMP is where I open my wmv files which comes from folks sending me
forwards in their e-mail. I like to be able to get those as some are quite
cute. I have the power point reader 2003 and my .pps files opens in this
program. The last two .pps files and the last .wmv file seemed to open fine.
Maybe I have been getting corrupted wmv and power point files and I have been
blaming it on AVG 8.0. I guess this could possibly be a conincidence, I hope
so. I will see what happens in the future. Thank again Gerry.

RE: AVG 8.0

Hi, I am not sure whether I am in the right section or not but hope someone
can help me. I have run AVG Free for ages but last night the update failed
saying that there was a missing .bin file. This happened after I had
installed the latest XP updates - could this be the problem? I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the AVG Free programme but the response is the
same. Since I have no idea what a .bin file is and whether the Microsoft
update caused the problem or whether it is an AVG problem I hope someone can
help me with this. Many thanks

Exactly the same happened to my wife's computer. She panicked and stopped
using it. I was not at home, so when I returned she asked me to check it out

I could not see anything obvious, but I did notice a request to restart the
PC. So I did this and AVG came good.

If this had not have worked, I would have removed AVG, downloaded it again
and reinstalled it. I can't figure out why this action by you did not
correct the problem.

Perhaps the .bin file (and the restart message) was from Microsoft Update. I
wonder whether it would help to check out the Microsoft Update site

Re: AVG 8.0

Thanks Trevor for your reply.
I recall that yesterday I also had a lot of auto updates from Windows and
perhaps this is the cause of the problem. I have emailed AVG and will also
phone microsoft tomorrow to establish whether it was the update which caused
the problem. I did not get a restart message at all - simply that the AVG
update was unsuccessful so I am tipping it might be a Windows update problem
which is the cause of my dilemma. Will wait until I speak to them tomorrow
before I do a System Restore ad I do not want to go down that path unless
absolutely necessary, being the computer idiot that I am :-) I still have no
idea what a .bin file is except I have a feeling that it is a binary file
which is obviously important to the running of the programmes and therefore I
feel that the problem might be a Microsoft one. Anyway thanks again - will
come back here and report solution WHEN I get it - hopefully tomorrow :-)

Yes, a .bin file is a binary file, used by programs.

However, I just had a look at the AVG program files (in C:\Program
Files\AVG\AVG8) and there are NO .bin files present

So it must be some system file, most likely from Microsoft Update.

The message that I saw was probably from Windows Update, and I just happened
to see it and act on it. I wonder whether a restart of your computer would
help.

Re: AVG 8.0

Trevor

I forgot to say I did reboot my computer thinking that would solve the
problem but it was to no avail. I tried it twice both before uninstalling
AVG and after reinstalling it so it sounds like it is a Windows update
problem. Thanks for letting me know about their being no bin files in AVG -
I would have no idea where to look for those :-)

Re: AVG 8.0

It is a known problem with the AVG update. See below from the AVG forum:

Re: AVG 8.0

Thanks very much Smirnoff - that link was terrific! At least now I know
where the problem lies and will await advice from AVG about a fix. Trouble
is that I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG Free so I don't have much idea
about how well I am covered. Thanks very much - terrific information

Re: AVG 8.0

Known issue.. Caused by a corrupt update package (at AVG's servers). They
should fix this shortcly, and no user action is required.
