Thanks Microsoft. Looks like over a hundred people have reported this
breaking their internet settings. Makes me wonder how many thousands more
would report it if they could get online.
Guess I'm going to have to turn off my automatic updates if you can't put
out security patches that fix security this well.
It's like fixing a rock chip in the paint of your car with a bundle of
dynomite. You may no longer notice the chip in the paint, but using your car
again may be problematic.

problems are now fixed with security update & ZA in the ZA latest update...

Follow the link below , download new update version of ZA 70.483.000, and
then download the security update KB 951748 afterwards.
I have done all pc's on my home network... all back to normal....

It's not Microsoft's fault that you're using non-conforming, flawed,
double-tricky software.

The way I understand the situation is that ZA tabulated file sizes of
certain Microsoft supplied files. When these file sizes changed - as they
did when Microsoft updated the files - ZA assumed something malicious did
the changing!

you would think ms would check that their update doesn't disrupt very
commonly used firewall software, like ZA, before letting it loose...

besides that, I found the update over-ruled the 'ask when to install'
setting, and updated anyway without asking... bit naughty i think...
I removed my update yesterday & left my pc on overnight to download bits,
only to find come morning, the pc had auto restarted after doing the update
again, grrrr....

Still ZA came through by supplying an almost immediate update...

Had the same problem of not being able to connect to internet.

Un-installed KB951749 and everything is OK.

Not sure if ZoneAlarm had anything to do with the problem, since the 'July
2008 edition of MS malicious software removal tool' was installed at the
same instance as the KB and that seemed to have had no problem .

Does not seem to have done that in my case. My XP Security setting (after
installing the problem KB) remained set at "download but install updates
only after checking with me".

Of course, that leaves you vulnerable to any "nasty buggers" who might be
exploiting the DNS vulnerability the update in question fixes.

In any case, ZA have now released an update for their software which will
resolve this problem, so you don't need to choose any more.

I've just installed the new relevant ZoneAlarm version 7.0.483.000,
and the outstanding MIcrosoft updates.
Everything seems to be working ok so far. Thanks to ZoneAlarm for
their swift action.

We had massive problems in the office with ZoneAlarm and KB951978
messing with each other. Half of the problem was knowing what users
might be affected, or if they hadn't been affected yet whether they
would be. I've been using Paglo to find the all users with ZoneAlarm
and also to check which machines haven't got the patch yet (https://
community.paglo.com/blog_topic/index/135-are-your-windows-machines-
patched-against-the-dns-cache-poisoning-vulnerability).

It might be time to give Zone the heave-ho.
