Yesterday's Microsoft marketing bravado is just too funny. So now, 17 months after general availability, Microsoft will promote Windows Vista? Get a life.

I have said again and again that Microsoft will be unable to revive the dead
vista. Vista is just too stupid to be saved. Here is an article that
speculates about this subject

http://keznews.com/4637_Can_There_Be_Wow_in_Vista_Marketing?

Yesterday's Microsoft marketing bravado is just too funny. So now, 17 months
after general availability, Microsoft will promote Windows Vista? Get a
life.

The big talk and promises came from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner
Conference, in Houston, where Brad Brooks fessed up about Vista marketing
mistakes and promised there would be response to Apple's "Get a Mac" ads.
They say that confession is good for the corporate soul. I say that it's not
good enough.

Microsoft should never have abandoned the original "Wow" Windows Vista
marketing campaign. It brought new meaning to the term "marketing blitz."
The campaign flashed by before anybody could blink and say, "Wow." Even if
Microsoft executives loathed the ads, better to keep them than have nothing.
I remain convinced that the Vista marketing campaign could have been very
effective. The TV commercials were aspirational, potentially creating
positive feelings about the then-mysterious Windows Vista.

Products don't sell themselves. There are good reasons why companies market
their stuff. Products must be sold. The best sales pitch is life betterment.
Why are people waiting a week in line to buy Apple's iPhone 3G? Because they
believe the device will make better their puny little lives. Apple iPhone TV
commercials run during most popular primetime programs. The marketing works.

There has been nobody out there saying how good is Windows Vista. But there
are plenty of voices, including Apple's "Get a Mac" ads, shouting about how
bad is the operating system. It's disgusting that Microsoft showed so little
Vista marketing concern for so long. Any ad would be better than none.

Suddenly, there's bravado. Microsoft is making promises about real Vista
marketing. Earth to Microsoft, it's going to be too little too late. Windows
Vista is the high school outcast. It has got a bad reputation, and people
won't easily forget. Marketing damage control is better than nothing, but it
could have been avoided. Microsoft should never have given up on "Wow."

Whatever Microsoft does next can't be much worse than nothing. Still, the
new marketing campaign, presumably for Windows Vista plus Windows Live, has
got to have punch. The marketing must be creative, funny and
aspirational-why your life will be better for buying a Windows Vista PC.
Microsoft has to make people want Vista.

I grew up in Northern Maine about 16 kilometers from the Canadian border.
The local CBC TV station, out of Saint John, New Brunswick, ran these crazy
shampoo commercials. The theme: An American would try to smuggle the shampoo
into the United States, only to be repeatedly caught by Canadian Customs.
The shampoo was only sold in Canada, but was so good Americans would risk
going to jail for smuggling out the hair contraband. The ads tapped into
feelings about Canadian pride, American disdain and the product's value. You
wanted to buy that shampoo.

To repeat: Microsoft marketing has to make people want to buy Windows Vista.
The marketing will fail if it's about features or appeals to the intellect.
Most purchasing decisions are emotional. Featuring people in ads is one of
the most effective ways of generating good feelings about products. After
all, people can connect to other human beings-there is common base-and
people use the products. Apple's "Get a Mac" ads are effective because of
how well they use people as metaphors for conveying typically complicated
technological gobbledygook.

This afternoon, I drank some coffee to fire up the synapses, pondering what
kind of commercials could be effective. I humbly offer up a couple, starting
with response to "Get a Mac" anti-Vista propaganda. Microsoft shouldn't
directly attack Apple. Better: Parody the "Get a Mac" ads, making a subtle
but important point about Windows PCs. For this one, viral video would be
better than commercial broadcast.

Here's what I'd do: The video opens with two guys standing against a white
background, just like Apple's commercials. The viewer hears the familiar
"Hello, I'm a Mac." "And I'm a PC." Then another guy appears, "And I'm a
PC." Another and another and another appears, with popping sounds, each
saying, "And I'm a PC." This goes on for about 10 seconds, with hundreds of
PC people from different races and cultural attire popping up to overlapping
choruses of "And I'm a PC." Then there is silence. The Mac guy looks at the
thousands of PC people and mutters, "Wow." Across the screen flashes text:
"You can be alone. Or you can have friends." The Windows Vista logo flashes.
Video ends.

Everybody knows that there are more Windows PCs than Macs, right? The
commercial would play on connotations of safety in numbers, community and
fear of being alone. Human beings are social creatures, after all.

Here's another idea, and the last one. I'm not an advertising expert. These
concepts are tough for me to think up: The scene opens on a park playground,
with a woman facing us; she taps on a notebook resting in her lap. The
camera zooms in as her friend walks up pushing a baby carriage. The woman
immediately closes the lid, and her friend reacts with surprise. "Jane, what
was that for? What are you hiding?" There is short silence, and the woman
flips the lid to show the Vista desktop. "It's Windows Vista. I've heard so
many bad things, I'm a little embarrassed about using it. But I really like
Windows Vista. It's simply amazing." The friend shakes her head and smiles.
She reaches into her tote bag, pulls out a laptop and flips the lid. It's
Windows Vista. Both women laugh.

There are lots of ways Microsoft could wrap up the commercial; I'm more
anxious to blog this post than make suggestions. I can't imagine Microsoft
ever airing such a concept, though. But Microsoft needs something this
aggressive-that hits hard at the Vista negativity and appeals to people that
like the operating system. The commercial could easily feature two teens
instead of mothers. Kids understand about being ostracized, as do many
parents of middle or high school students.

How will Microsoft really market Windows Vista? We may soon find out.

Making stupid statements leads me to believe that you're unable to deal
with the changes from XP to Vista so you're very frustrated.
Understandable. Some people don't like change and some don't react very
well to it. You can't blame that on Vista.

I have seen many, many changes in a lot of different OS since I started
using computers in 1969.
Change isn't the issue, function is.
I can make Vista function, I just don't like the way it functions.

Well, my experience with electronics/computers predates yours (1961)
and I have no problem with how Vista functions and I like the way it
functions.
Occasionally going back to XP always validates my choice, and Vista is
clearly superior to XP in every way, as least for me.

I'm glad you like it, I don't.
Isn't it grand to have choices.
The choice of an OS is largely based on ones OPINION of that OS.
Too many people confuse OPINION with FACT.
The fact that you like it doesn't make it a good OS, except in your opinion.
Opinions can be like rectums...everyone has one and there is always someone
who thinks theirs doesn't stink!
I have done the Beta of every consumer Windows since W95, this one just hits
me totally wrong.
While I haven't coded myself in many years, I think I know poorly written
code when I use it.
Vista is a huge OS, but that doesn't excuse the poor implementation of some
good ideas.
In my opinion, it's Microsoft's version of the Edsel.

So have I.

this one just hits me totally wrong.

Well, when I loaded the first Longhorn beta I said to myself..."so what
is the point"?
Eventually, after working with it, I got the point. Vista is much better
and much more capable OS than XP is or can ever be.

Most of the initial glaring bugs have been resolved by updates and SP1,
just like they did with XP, remember?

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. But like you said, it's only your
opinion.
To me Vista is without a doubt the very best OS MS has ever released and
most definitely, the best OS available today for the desktop.

Yes, many of the bugs have been resolved by the SP, but what can Vista
actually do that XP can't?
IMHO, things are not where they belong (based on intuitive use, not MS idea
of where things should be, probably based on having a few people come in and
use a machine to see where they look for things) and it takes at least
triple the hardware capability to run anywhere near as well.
I don't buy into the claims that Vista is more secure, I don't have security
issues with XP.
That said, I have yet to see one real benefit to using Vista.
I used it throughout Beta, I use it a couple hours every day; but I am
always glad when it's time to go to MY machine, XP Pro and all.
I have 6 computers in one room downstairs for the kids (age 7-15) and their
friends to use.
They all have their own myspace pages, facebook, etc etc and have been using
computers since they could run the mouse.
One machine has Vista, the other five have XP.
Guess which one sits idle unless the others are all busy?
Even then they fight over who HAS TO use it.
They would rather use the Celeron 1.3Ghz/512MB/XPH than the C2D
2.66Ghz/3GB/VHP.
That tells ME a lot about Vista's design.

You can tell a lot about a company in HOW they test their products.
Major corporations tend to run double blind studies and those doing
the testing are picked from a pool with the testers having absolutely
no idea who they will be and having no input on who's picked. The
selection process often being done by some outside firm to guard
against bias and loading the deck with flunkies sure to always give a
thumbs-up no matter what.

Microsoft is very different.

They tend to hand pick WHO tests their software. Often the same people
they've used before. Frank claims to have been one of their beta
testers. If true, that speaks volumes if some idiot, hot-head with a
potty mouth and next to no technical skill or real world knowledge is
selected as a tester.

Take another area, complaints. Microsoft doesn't give a rat's ass
about how a typical customer feels about their products. They go to
their MVPs and/or beta testers and sometimes their big corporate
customers and laughingly as dumb as that is, listen only to them... at
the exclusion of everyone else. So a tiny sample decides what the rest
of us end up with. No wonder Windows always sucks and includes
"features" nobody wants or asked for and lacks common sense design.

Even looking at this hand-picked pool, Microsoft often ignores the
input of the people they hand picked. This is the reason many bugs and
design flaws creep into the released product. Microsoft doesn't seem
to care. They have some preconceived notion and come hell or high
water THAT is what ends up getting shipped...if ready or not, bugs and
all.

That is how Microsoft does business. I know, I once was a beta tester
for them myself. Once was enough. Never again. No wonder Windows
always needs patches and a Service Pack, or two or three. Instead of
trying to get it right the FIRST time the real beta testing is done by
customers AFTER the product is released. Which again explains why no
version of Windows is truly "ready" until AFTER the first beta at the
least and many larger customers refuse to upgrade until that happens.

Vista has proven to be so bad, even after SP1 the majority of major
accounts aren't upgrading. No wonder Microsoft is racing to get

This is absolute garbage:

1) You know nothing about development testing.
2) You know nothing about quality assurance testing by quality assurance
testers.
3) You know nothing about a unit test plan.
4) You know nothing about a quality assurance test plan.
5) You know nothing about user quality testing.
6) You know nothing about a user test plan.

You know nothing about testing any software in a corporation.

You're smoke out of your a-hole here and you need to keep you ignorant
mouth shut.

"Ringmaster" is one of those pseudo-intellectuals who thinks he knows
all the answers. He has been told many times that most of his issues
with Vista are hardware-related. His computer has either a defective
motherboard or power supply that is causing his "issues".

Oh yeah, I've been told all kinds of crap by idiots in this newsgroup.
Ever hear of Google?

Try searching "Vista Problems" 1,290,000 hits and counting.

Now lets apply some simple logic. Either the handful of bubble headed
buffoons that worship Microsoft and post here are right or all those
people reporting real problems are right.

Hmmm.... I wonder.

Technical experts from the beginning have been hard on Vista pointing
out tons of problems.

Technical writers in countless magazines, blogs and forums have ripped
Vista from one end to another and conducted conclusive tests showing
Vista is often slower and more sluggish that XP.

Most damning is both Gates and Ballmer ADMIT Vista is flawed and are
racing to get Windows 7 out.

You were saying?
