Win 98se USB ver 1 to ver 2 update question

I have a Packard Bell from when they were sold in the US that came
with 98se and USB ver 1. The system runs good yet and does what I
need it too. The only thing is that it would be nice to have USB ver
2.

Is it possible and not too much trouble to change it to USB ver 2??

For Windows 98 SE (but NOT the original 98), you simply add a USB2 card.
Just make certain that Windows 98 SE drivers are supplied. Here's one that
will work:

Depends upon the motherboard, if it supported 2.0 it would have been
configured as such.
To get USB 2.0 buy an adapter which provides it. Might be wise to find one
with the 98SE software/support IF it requires it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a motherboard from
a machine like the one described be unable to support the speed
of USB 2, even if you somehow found drivers for it?

USB2 is backwards compatible with 1.1 and if your machine is
that old (mine is even older), 1.1 will be enough of a treat,
IMHO. I am pretty sure you can't buy anything that's not ver. 2
by now, cards or peripherals.

You woud be correct for new parts, but USB 1{.1} used adapters obviously
still exist..

When I got system it had Win 98 and USB 2 was not out yet. That is
probably why it had version 1.

Well, what model Pakard Bell are we discussing, we can look at the specs to
see if the board supported USB 2.0.

I bought a USB card that fits in a PCI slot and the cost was only around $10
US.
There are a wide variety including those that even have firewire, etc
connectors on them.
One place to check for a quick idea is pricewatch.com .

Well, thought that would help, but it must be so old there isn't any
readily available info...

Okay, nearest I can find was originally configured for Win95, best possible
USB 1, so a USB 2.0 adapter and 98SE will be required.

The system was purchased new by me in 12/11/98 and came with Win98 and
2 usb 1 ports which I upgraded to 98se.

I have all the original books, receipts, etc for it so I know the
above info is correct and it did not have 95 on it.

Guess I will try the USB2 card Gary S. Terhune spoke about earlier.

When I installed the PCI USB2 card on my Win98SE system, I did not have to
remove/disable my USB 1 ports. In fact, I use both at the same time.

I opened my case and there are only 2 PCI slots of which one contains
the ethnet card ans the other the card for the modem so I guess that
means I do not install a USB 2 card.

It is too old a system to start over hauling it or whatever to get USB
2 capabilities so I guess it is use as is or get a new system! UGH

Why do you need a network card AND a telephone modem? How do you connect to
the internet? Are you providing Internet Sharing from your machine?

The ethernet card (network card) is for the high speed DSL modem and
the card for the moden or whatever was installed when I got the
Packard Bell system new back in 1998.

I could probably remove the card for modem but I use it if I ever need
a backup plus I do not really know a lot about working on these so to
remove it and do whatever I would have to get it done and it is too
old a system for me to start monkeying with it and putting money into
it.

So------- As I said I guess it is use as is or get new system.

Ahh, well if you're looking for the right reason, now isn't a bad time to be
considering your options relative to getting a new machine. There's still
plenty of XP's around, or you can go for Vista and a rather steeper learning
curve.
