Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Ed, another way to invoke System Information is by opening "Help" and typing
"System Information" in the search box

I wonder you are able to confirm that Msinfo files do in fact exist on your
box?

My count is about 6
There's :-
msinfo32.chm
msinfo32.exe
msinfo32.dll
msinfo.htm
msinfo.inf
msinfo32.lgc
located in various folders.

When it runs, it opens in the "Help & Support Centre" window - just wonder
if you might have issues with WinMe "Help"?

I'm sure that there once was yet another way into SI, but that *may* have
been Win95 or 98. Can't remember!

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Mart,
Yes, all the data for System Information is there in "Help". However,
it just does not want to show when going through programs|accessories|
systems tools|system information.
Don't know much about the registry files .ini | .exe | etc. Thus it is
obvious
that I'm limited with the registry knowledge.
On the other hand, all the provided links (included Harry's, Thanks!) lead
to forums
that do not give a straight answer....unless you're willing to pay for it.
Thanks again!

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Mart, You also brought up a point that I had neglected to mention. It was
approximately back in June 18, 2008 when I installed "An Unofficial
Windows ME SP" update/patch, which was published in this group (Can't
remember the name of the OP).
At that time, after installing the above, I posted to the group the fact
that
"Help and Support" was not showing up when getting into Safe Mode.
A couple of attempts were suggested, but none worked. Thus, your comment
on my having issues with Help & Support are right on! (Meaning, at that
time, the files
for System Information may have also been clobbered).

Thanks!

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Ed, I suppose you *might* have a faulty shortcut in "programs|accessories|
systems tools|system information."

FWIW - Looking at the shortcut's Properties, mine points to "C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\MSINFO32.EXE"

But how that calls the H&SC, etc., I've no idea - my guess though, is that
it relies on plenty of registry keys. And, IIRC - you were in conversation
with Mike M in June, regarding the MDAC issues and I think you concluded
then that you had registry problems. I suppose you could try scanreg /fix -
unless you've got an SR point back that far - but that's really just
clutching at straws.

Fortunately, as MS usually offer more than one way of skinning the cat, you
can at least use the H&SC to access your System Information. <g>

Good luck

Mart

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Mart, Thank you for your response. I don't have a short cut problem. Mine
points
exactly as yours, as you indicated below. Problem is MSINFO32.EXE just sits
there
when I click on it. Yes, I did converse with Mike about the problem with
the "Unofficial
Windows ME SP" installation back in June -- and specifically Help and
Support. It's
definitely a Registry problem and I opted to leave it as is. Mike was going
to try and work
on installing that "Win ME SP" on his box, but he must have had other
priorities.
Alan Edwards has helped me in the past with Registry situations, but I
haven't seen him on
this NG in a long time.
Like you said, I do have other ways to access Help and Support & System
Information,
thus let's leave it as is. (No, I don't have a restore point that goes back
that far. I did a scanreg /restore a couple of days ago).

Appreciate your help.

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Hmm.. Just beginning to wonder Ed, whether you *might* have a damaged
"MSINFO32.EXE". The reasons that it *might* be suspect are :-
a) because you can access SI directly via the H&SC, but not using
MSINFO32.EXE
b) there is a Win98 article :-
"Error Message Running the System Information Tool"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191986
which, although doesn't directly describe your symptoms, certainly implies
possible/potential damage to this file. (Or at least it is prone to damage!)

If you want to pursue it (although you might prefer to leave 'well' alone
<g>) then you could extract a fresh copy using msconfig (and/or other
methods)

However, just doing a further bit of digging, it would appear that
MSINFO32.EXE is also dependant on (shared) MS Visual C++ Runtime Library
files e.g. MFC40.DLL etc.,
See "Error Messages When Trying to Save System Information File"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192753

Can't say in this case, but there have been "issues" with one or two of
these MFC4x.DLL series files over the years, where incorrect or old versions
have crept into the Windows (and other folders) and caused odd "effects"

But even more intriguing, is this article which as the title implies, is the
definitive answer to your symptom :-
"Cannot Start Microsoft System Information Tool"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=224425
I guess, sadly not in your case. But does show how other things can affect
it. I suppose a clean install is out of the question? <g>

Sorry I can't help further

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Hey Ed!!!
Man, it has been a while since I have read your face in here!! Hope
you are doing well. Just curious on your issue........can you double click
on the msinfo32.exe file and start the app? If no, have you tried
extracting a fresh copy?? I didn't want to go back and read the whole
thread, so, excuse me if I am digging up old info. Take care, my
friend.....
Heirloom, old and like it in here....lots of old friends

Re: Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer - Addendum

Hi Heirloom,

See my post "Thank you" I included your name in there.

Appreciate your help, but as you can see, I have switched
to Windows Vista -- and love it!

Cheers!
