Hello netadmin07,

No, just inserted the disc and let the autostart run the wizard, where i
followed all steps. The installation i run as the domain administrator, so
no special account.

Only if you want a special account for Exchange. In a larger org with
delegated administrators for SQL, Exchange, etc, that is prudent, but in a
small environment, not really necessary.

If you want, the account should have:
1. AD Account Operators in order to manipulate user account AD
Exchange-related attributes.
2. Local Admin Rights on the machine in order to install software and other
local tasks a regular 'local user' cannot perform.
3. It does not require Domain Admin rights or permissions. You will use an
admin account in the AD's Enterprise and Schema Admin group. By default the
Domain Admin in the forest root domain is the EA, however you have to
manually add them to the Schema admin group if not already added, in order
to make the schema changes required.
4. Other rights as seen fit for the delegated Exchange admin to perform
their duties.

Did you run the other preps in the order they are to be run? The
preparedomain step is the last one to be run.

Otherwise you probably didn't install the required software for Exchange
2007, such as the Powershell, .NetFramework 2.0, .Netframework updates, MMC
3.0 (unless already Windows 2003 R2), etc. If the server is 64bit, you can
use the Exchange 2007 either RTM or SP1 release CD. If the server is a 32bit
machine, you will need to download the 32bit demo version to run it on a
32bit machine.

Read the following to get a better idea.

How to install Exchange Server 2007 Schema Extensions within a 32-bit Active
Directory environment
http://msmvps.com/blogs/clustering/...in-a-32-bit-active-directory-environment.aspx

Then (if not already done so)...
Run setup.com /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions
Run setup.com /PrepareSchema
Run setup.com /PrepareAD
Run setup.com /PrepareDomain (or /PrepareAllDomains if there are more than
one domain in the forest)

Re: Windows Server 2008 w/Exchange 2007 Authentication on Active D

Alrighty...

Exchange, AD, DNS and DHCP installations are now complete.
Thanks to you both.

My next major hurtle, which hopefully, will not be too big..

Our current network setup in production is as follows:

Server #1: Windows SBS 2003, Running Exchange 2003, BES Server
Server #2: Windows Server 2003, DNS, DHCP
Server #3: Windows NT, PDC and BDC

How do I copy, or move the current Mail Store/Database from SBS Exchange
2003 to the new Windows Server 2008, Exchange 2007 Server.

These are currently on two separate networks entirely, but I assume that the
next steps will be to replace the NT domains, with my AD server, and the
Exchange replacement is my problem, not sure how to do this the proper way.

Thanks for all the help so far.

SBS? I'm trying to read through this whole thread, but I don;t see that you
mentioned this was an SBS installation.

If it is truly SBS, you CANNOT move Exchange. Period.

Re: Windows Server 2008 w/Exchange 2007 Authentication on Active D

Re: Windows Server 2008 w/Exchange 2007 Authentication on Active D

Sorry ACE,

let me clarify... Ok, so the installation of Exchange was a new 2008 server
with a new copy of Exchange 2007.. That was the first thing I needed help
installing.

However,
Our current network (the production network) consists of a SBS 2003 server
with Exchange 2003, which was installed before I started at this company...

So, I'm attempting to replace that SBS server running Exchange with this new
one we just installed.

I hope there is a way to copy mailboxes or somehow get the exchange data
from the sbs to the new server... I don't understand why there wouldn't be a
way to do that?

Thanks.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. There are a couple of ways to go about
this. The following is a 30,000' view of the procedure.

1. Install a brand new domain, recreate the user accounts with the same
exact names and aliases as current users and create mailboxes for all of
them. Use Exmerge using the two step process and pump out the mail boxes
into PSTs. In the new domain, use Exmerge to pump the PSTs into their
mailboxes.

2. Install an additional DC into the current SBS domain. Exmerge the
mailboxes. Mail-disable all accounts. Completely uninstall Exchange from
SBS. There are procedures to completely remove Exchange from a Forest that
you must follow to remove any remnants in the Scehma. Move any apps over to
a different server. Install new Exchange server. Create new mailboxes for
the accounts. Use Exmerge to pump their mail data in.

Keep in mind Exmerge wasn't designed for Ex2007, but there's a way. How to
use Exmerge with Ex2007:
http://www.exchangeinbox.com/article.aspx?i=88

How to remove Exchange Server 2003 from your computerThis how-to article
describes the steps to automatically or manually remove Microsoft Exchange
Server 2003 from your computer. Before you can remove ...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833396

Me thinks a new forest/domain is the better procedure so you can a fresh
clean start.
