Brian's command got wrapped. It needs to look EXACTLY like this, including
whether upper or loser case (parts of it, anyway.). There is only one space,
after RUNDLL32. What you should do is simply Copy/Paste the line into the
Run box.

RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance

I went toC:/Program Files, Internet Explorer and clicked on IE6SETUP.EXE. after
waiting a while I did a ctl alt dlt and it said "ie6setup.exe not
responding"........I am guessing that is because it tried to download some updated
files but for what ever reason...it doesn't work. I tried it twice.

After installing Avast! and restarting, before doing anything else, pause
all providers, then in that same general menu, get the Updates. First the
Program Updates, then AVS! Update.

This issue has spanned four threads, now, and we'll try to wrap it up in the
thread "IE Running well so far". However, it boils down to there was a
thirty-day trial firewall installed, so we got rid of it. But the REAL issue
is that for Avast! Web Shield to function, it needs to have port 12080 open.

and use localhost and port 12080. For MSIE; Internet Options>connections>Lan
Settings> same basic choices as ZA. Next you need to put the loopback
adapter in the Trusted zone of ZA; FW>Zones: use IP address as the ADD
option and name it localhost with IP 127.0.0.1 and assign it as Trusted.
The Avast webshield should begin scanning and logging.

What ZA? There is no ZA. In any case, the issue has been dealt with in
another thread in so far as IE is concerned. The real question is whether to
use WebShield at all.

I neglected to add to the previous post that we have a "wrap-up" thread
going named "IE running well so far". The lady also just started a new
thread with a request for help in choosing and using a new firewall, "Which
firewall is best for Win98SE". Perhaps you could add something there?

The standard shield is most important. The webshield is add protection and
may be redundant. The logging on the standard shield exceeds the webshield.
The webshield acts like a "transparent proxy server"or application level FW
for Avast database only. I do not know if it needs server rights or not.
Most programs do not. I have no program alerts with these settings and ZA
set such that webshield has access rights only.

As noted, the problem was solved. And if we want to enable WebShield, Brian
A. has provided the support pages that explain how to do it in Windows 98
(different from later versions.) Not sure WHICH one of these threads it's
in, but perhaps you could find those messages. Brian didn't contribute TOO
much to the threads, so it should be easy to find them.

All I know is that I installed Avast! on a relatively new install of 98,
didn't have to change the firewall settings in my router (don't have any
other firewall), didn't have to do any of the things suggested in the
articles cited by Brian, and it is causing no problems. Never HAVE had to
disable the WebShield, that I can recall, and I've not only been using it
for at least a few years, but have installed it on numerous machines with
WebShield enabled (including several '9x machines) and had no problems.
Which just goes to show you that it ain't all that simple.

I've implemented that, as it seemed to improve avast!'s performance
at...

(Although, STILL it didn't appear to be as perfect as McAfee was,
which reported a visus for all 8 of the bogus viruses there when
clicked. With avast!, some of the double-zips had to be opened
after download before an alarm would sound-- not simply clicked
for download. )

So...

(a) Click the avast! icon in the tray.
(b) Select Web Shield in the Installed Providers box.

What shows for Scanned Count, & does it increase for each site you
visit? Also...

(c) Click the Customise button.
(d) Basic tab-- ensure both items are checked.
(e) Web Scanning tab-- ensure Scan All Files is bolted.
(f) Advanced tab-- Check Show Detailed Info on
Performed Action

Now, do you see a TON of HTTP's & TIFs getting scanned in pop-up
windows at the bottom of your screen for each site you visit?

One thing about that HTTP Proxy...

On the one occasion I temporarily uninstalled an earlier sub-version of
avast!, the setting was not automatically undone. That makes sense,
since it was manually implemented in the first place on this Win98
machine-- but one must remember to undo it manually (I guess), in the
event one wants to uninstall avast! for good. If not undone, I'm
thinking the NET won't work!

OK, so Web Shield doesn't work on Win98 without the proxy. Didn't know that.
Well, IMO, that ain't worth it. It can just sit there and do nothing so long
as it stays out of the way. What I don't get is that it causes Ginny
problems, even with no firewall installed on Windows (just the Belkin
router.) Unless maybe I've undone enough now that it WILL just sit there and
do nothing. I can't get her to test it, <g>.

Yes you can. I just changed those proxy settings , but the Web button has disappear
in Avast. Did we remove it in some way? (finished my other project).

Maybe we did. You have to find it in Add/Remove Programs and Change
installed components.
