Now that we have brought up the notion of "wasting time".

What do you do with your OS that's so wonderful? Is it
something that can't be done in all the others? What
tools do you use exactly?

What does a Linux or Mac user do with a VM with an empty copy
of Windows in it?

Linux is not just "for consumers".

It is also for servers.

For example, I am presently busy replacing Windows servers with Linux
servers at work. These servers, do not even have a GUI, they run
applications whose job is to move data around.

The nice thing, and that somewhat pertains to your mention of
scripting in the signature, is that most of what these servers do, is
scripted, so there is very little need for any sort of manual set up
work.

Most of that 90-ish percent don't know Linux exists. Of those, few have
used it. Of those, fewer still have used it as a pre-installed system.

Most of the 90-ish% use Windows because that is what almost everyone else
uses.

And, BTW, Windows doesn't "work better" than Linux. It only appears that
way because hardware vendors rarely directly support Linux systems.

LOL... the end result is the same. I can use a windows computer and it
does what I need. I can do the same with a linux machine... sometimes.
And, sometimes isn't good enough.

many people are working to make it more palatable to the consumer masses.
However, it is extremely hard, some say impossible, to overcome the
inertia Microsoft has built up.

As for the "mass trolling" you really show check the attributes to see
who started the massive cross-posting.

Real Linux users? Those of us that use it as our main desktop OS when we
can? Those fo us that have web servers and ftp servers?

I already got over it. That's why I use Linux.
You were complaining about spell checker not catching it. Type coral
into any spell checker. Non of them will catch it because it ain't
spelled wrong.
I admitted to spelling it wrong. So what. If that is all you have to
base your argument on.
If you are losing an argument start hitting on things that don't really

I stand corrected. I made an assumption based upon the years of Linux trolls
that have been harassing Windows groups since I can remember, but you're
right, Moshe is an A**hole. Already knew that, but didn't flash on his being
the instigator of all this recent stuff (many of my threads are missing
their heads.) My apologies. I'll consider what might be done about it.

Of course, we could all just reply to Moshe with a blank post and remove the
Linux groups from the headers. Problem is, there's too many on your side who
are of the same mindset as Moshe, just not as dedicated.

At the moment, I'm disabled but things are looking up. I use my machine to
test Windows setups for compatibility and any other issues before I install
them for other folks, to replicate Windows issues, to simply use the various
versions of Windows regularly enough that I can stay in the Windows service
industry... Also to run Adobe Photoshop 6, Macromedia Freehand 9 and several
other nice graphics-related apps (and no, I will NOT upgrade either of
those, simply because I think the newer versions of Adobe apps suck (and I
don't need them) and they don't make Freehand anymore. I know, you're
thinking "Mac", but I tried that when we got into the publishing business
and not only don't I like the OS, I hate being locked into such a limited
set of expensive hardware choices.

Plus, I build the occasional custom Access app.

I tried a few Linux distros several years ago, when the word "distro"
probably still smelled of baby powder, but my business, along with medium to
high-end graphics, was supporting Windows at the consumer and SOHO market
(small one, it's a small town over an hour from anywhere.) Of course, there
was little need for Linux pros in my town, so Windows was it. Due to my
current disability, my brain won't retain info I learn like it used to, so
until I get a lot better and can even just keep up with Windows, learning
Linux is totally not in the cards, but I look forward to eventually seeing
how the project has come along.

Besides, as the following poster says, Linux really isn't ready to take on
the consumer/SOHO market yet. And that's my niche. When I find a steady
client or two who wants to try Linux, and I haven't already. I'll check it
out.

Not sure what your intent was in that last paragraph, but the answer is that
there isn't any such thing as an "empty" copy of Windows.

Linux itself. Not at all. My beef is with the never-ending (even if Moshe
didn't exist) trail of trolls who use Linux as an rallying call. After all,
how many Windows users do you see in your groups (present situation
excepted), that day in and day out trash Linux while you try to assist less
knowledgeable people who are trying to learn Ubuntu?

Which is why it will take a traditionally capitalistic paradigm, not some

I can give plenty of examples to support Ed's side. What meaningful task can
you do with a Linux PC that you can't do with Windows? One or two examples
would be sufficient, and by "meaningful" I mean not including keeping the
user occupied with programming the machine itself.

I am reading alt.os.linux.ubuntu at present, and about half of the
messages is from Windows users "trashing" Linux.

Personally, I would not necessarily want them to fully go away, but
cutting down on volume would be wonderful.

Sometimes I succumb to my own trolling instincts and post some Windows
trashing messages, but it is not often.

Automated DVD ripper in the style of audio mp3 rippers.

Also, being able to "merely do something too" is far too low a bar
for the platform that's been the industry monopoly juggernaut for over
20 years. It shouldn't just be a "me too" situation. It should be a
dramatic improvement.

Windows shouldn't just be a platform for free software projects.
That really defies the point of paying for it.

A mac or a linux user has Vista in a VM. What do they bother using
it for? Games?

As I would expect, today and for the last several weeks, at least. But what
about a year ago? Five years ago? Or any time before Moshe started his
campaign? What about people simply trolling for the sake of trolling,
attacking anyone with any handy excuse? You get much of that?

Well, trolls *can_be* entertaining, and can help one sharpen one's own wits.
However, they mostly just annoy and get in the way of doing my "job".

Same here, only I try to remember that I have nothing against Linux or it's
honest users/developers/etc. I tend to simply flame the trolls who start
things, arguing them into a corner they can't dig their way out of, which, I
admit sometimes has me taunting them with the usual list of Linux failings,
real and apocryphal. Mostly, though, I make it personal and attack with
maximum viciousness, just because it's feels so good to let go every once in
a while and the jerks (usually) deserve it. It's incredibly cathartic, <s>.

Hadn't noticed that our SPAM was coming from Google Groups. I'll have to
take a closer look. But it only amounts to an average of less than one per
day per group, probably due to our new, INCREDIBLY overactive news server
monitors. I'm not absolutely certain, but I believe that overzealousness
caused several hundred of my posts to be prematurely removed from the MS
server, which is where I read. That or I wasn't being paranoid and someone
really IS out to get me, <g>.

Your points have already been addressed in my replies to others. I think
I've explained myself sufficiently. However, the facts that I'm aware of,
including comments from some Linux fans, is that your "leaps & bounds"
description is, well, highly exaggerated. I've been hearing the same thing
for several years , now, with the facts being that Linux development for
consumer and SOHO versions is proceeding at something more resembling a
snail's pace. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, just like I'll be happy to
be proven wrong when I say that the much vaunted Windows 7 won't be released
until well past it's target date, that it will take MUCH longer than
previous versions of Windows to get debugged by the public, and thus Vista
will end up being the ruling OS until sometime after 2013-2015.

A failure to produce a truly new Windows this time (as was promised all
through the development of Vista), will perhaps be the only opening for
Linux to gain any real market share during the next decade.

I've been hearing the same thing for 15+ years.
In the Linux community, every year is *the year of desktop Linux*.
It hasn't happened yet.

As for development, Linux is getting better in "leaps & bounds" however
it's still being ignored by Joe consumer and until it can offer something
better than Windows for Joe, that will make it worth switching. Linux will
remain a niche OS.

If this is indeed the case, Linux has a golden opportunity that it really
should take advantage of.

Linux is right on the edge at the moment IMHO and it could go either way.
Vista IMHO is total crap and if Linux can't take on Vista, Linux is dead as
far as a desktop system.
